Close-up section of flint wall surrounding St. Mary’s Church, Binsted in West Sussex.
Some of the flint is knapped, the stone chipped away to expose a smooth inner surface forming the outer face of the wall.
This particular wall also has small shards of flint in the binding cement (or whatever material was used to keep the wall solid). The shards are edge on, and look sharp despite being old, and are probably left over from knapping the large flintstones.

Another wall! 😊
This is part of the wall surrounding St. Mary’s Church in Binsted. I visit the churchyard occasionally as my parents’ ashes are scattered there, but hadn’t noticed before that between the larger knapped flints the edge-on flint shards look quite lethal.

A flint wall full of texture and history. Monochrome brings out the contrast, the grit, the timeworn beauty.
