A metal fence post exposed in a cut bank approximately 0.5 m below soil surface.
I was surmised to find this T-post (fencepost) sticking out of recently eroded bank of Sand Creek in Torrey, Utah. These flashy desert creeks are amazingly dynamic. These posts have been in use since 1920ish, so the creek has aggraded and eroded a lot in a short period of time. #fluvialgeomorphology
🏞️🔬 DAS deployment inside a river!!!
What can we learn from the first DAS deployment inside a river?
What can DAS detect from inside a river?

Caryapundy Swamp, western NWS: a wide flat landscape of pale sand and sparse scrubby plants under a cloudless sky. Geopick (foreground) and distant person for scale.
shout-out to "Wetlands in the arid Northern Territory" (Duguid et al. 2005) for a great discussion on classifying wetlands in a moisture-limited landscape

Satellite image of the Finke River in the Simpson Desert. The longitudinal dunes are deep orange-brown and the highly sinuous river is white sand.

This river could be in Stage 8 of the Stream Evolution Model. Single thread channel and a wide connected floodplain. I'd bet that more log jamming would push the river into a multi-thread planform. Keswick River, New Brunswick #fluvialgeomorphology #rivers #keswickriver #stagezerorestoration
Given time and space, streams and rivers will find a dynamic equilibrium as a wide wet valley. In the Stream Evolution Model this is referrred to as Stage Zero Reach. Nashwaaksis River, New Brunswick Canada. #fluvialgeomorphology #stage0restoration #rivers #nashwaakriver

Come be a Mendenhall #ResearchFellow at USGS in beautiful La Crosse WI! Our team is hiring a #PostdoctoralScholar to work at the intersection of #fluvialgeomorphology, #ecology, and #rivermanagement on the Mighty Mississippi River. Details here: tinyurl.com/7n5pak86
View of a vertical river cut bank in the desert. A pool of water is visible in the foreground and the ephemeral channel is indicated by a gravel bed. The cut bank also has a large cottonwood growing from it with exposed roots. In the bank, alternating layers of gravel and fine sediment can be seen, indicating where the channel and flood plains we're located historically within the river valley.
Detail view of the cut bank showing layers of gravel separated by extremely fine sediment. Gravels indicate where the channel bed and riffle habitats were historically. The layers of fine sediment indicate the historic flood plain.
Another detail of the cut bank showing a thick layer of gravel near the bottom and successive gravel layers of variable thickness moving up, separated by layers of extremely fine sediment.
One final detail shot showing successive layers of gravel and fine sediment in a desert river cut bank.
Found this neat eroding #DesertStream bank with alternating layers of gravel and fine sediment. Spent a while daydreaming about the path of this meandering #river across the valley bottom, with gravels indicating riffles and the fine sediments showing the historic floodplain. 🧪 #FluvialGeomorphology

Slide from a conference presentation. Title reads: "Landscape evolution of the Darling River (a long dance of change)". Picture is the alluvial plains: a broad landscape extending off to the flat horizon. Blue sky above, reddish dust on the horizon, landscape is flat grey dusty plains with a light cover of thin green grass, and isolated trees here and there. NSW Australia
