Something Wicked This Way Comes?
Eberhard's epic 18th c. journalistic attempt to debunk the supernatural and superstition left this stunning record of witch hunting and ghostly hand burns that only raises more questions!

A book lying open with some pages unfolded that show images of a full frontal skeleton and a selection of surgical instruments.
It's #FoldOutFriday and we bring you this beauty by James Cooke, 'Marrow of Chirurgery with The Anatomy of Humane Bodies According to the Most Modern Anatomists' (1685). Cooke served as surgeon in the first English Civil War and his work became the most popular surgical text of the late 17th century

Thanks @thewildbluesky.bsky.social for introducing me to this utter insanity of an 18th c. novel!
A large book rested on a cushion opened at a folded-out plate with multiple illustrations depicting the anatomy and structure of the eye.
For #FoldOutFriday we have Anatomy of Human Bodies by Isbrand van Diemerbroeck first published 1672. Diemerbroeck also published on his experience during a Dutch Black Death epidemic in the 1630s, and he is the doctor commonly depicted in 'Plague Doctor' illustrations
A book lying open with a page open and paper folded out to show a plant illustration, and a snake weight holding down the opposite page.
For #FoldoutFriday, a 17thc illustration of the highly toxic Hemlock Water Dropwort. The roots are often referred to as “dead man’s fingers” and the plant inspired the deadly “Nightlock” in the Hunger Games.
Fold-out from a work by James Cook showing 13 depictions of the fetus in various positions in the womb before birth, which resemble small children bouncing about.
For #FoldOutFriday the 'child turning itself in birth' from James Cooke's Marrow of Chirurgery (1685). Similar images depicting fetal presentation were common in 17thc surgical & midwifery texts. With the fetuses often resembling small toddlers just busy going about their day! #earlymodern

On #NationalIllustrationDay we’re bringing #FoldOutFriday over from the other place! Anatomical illustrations of the heart with flaps raised to expose the left and right ventricles. In René Descartes ‘De Homine’, which was published posthumously in 1662 due to fears of being branded a heretic

That's the Jesuit Society of Jesus, via the fevered brain of Athanasius Kircher! I think I count 45 of them on this "Catholic Horoscope" sheet?? In our 1671 edition of his Ars magna lucis et vmbrae (Case folio G 66 .466).
