Even better, a progression of dated pencil marks throughout show how a family likely worked their way through the text a day at a time, as pedagogically recommended. We can see what words Amelia(?) might have struggled with, and what words (“mon Dieu!”) might have been objectionable #herbook
Another delight from this weekend’s book fair in Edinburgh: a contemporary leather label belonging to an Amelia Keir pasted in a sammelband of installments of L’Ami des Enfants, a late 18c children’s serial, “d’un petit format portatif pour les Enfans.” #herbook
A research query for the #herbook community. I'm working on a short piece about a law book with a girl's signature ("her book!") -- an extension of a blog post.
Anyone w other examples of early modern woman's provenance on law books? Esp British/ British American?

Title page of Lord's Supper book about the Eucharist from 1674 with the signature of early owner Anne Hurst at the top.
Angela with the Communion chalice and bread, "Mary Surly her Book" written at the top!
Female Trouble?
At least two women, Mary Surly and Anne Hurst, owned this 1674 book about the Sacrament of Communion. It only took 300 years for female priests to consecrate it themselves!

Title page of French edition of Luther on Holy Scripture, inscribed in French by Judith Delamotte of Southampton 1598.
Favourite #Herbook . 1545 Luther inscribed by Judith Delamotte (b. Demaistres), widow of Philip Delamotte (m. 1586), minister of the French Church in Southampton, and a powerful businesswoman (cloth maker/merchant) in her own right. St Paul's Cathedral Library. I don't think widely known.

What's a historian to do when the present is unbearable? How about post a shameless plug for #herbook about the past? Your chance to think with the #Jews of #EarlyModern #Prague about their #memory, their #history; with careful attention to #gender all along the way. www.sup.org/books/jewish...
This week's Early Modern Female Book Ownership blog features a religious book owned by possibly Devonian female owners. #HerBook
In our first blog post of 2026, @franceswolfreston.bsky.social discusses a religious books with some unusual inscriptions by one or two early modern women named Martha earlymodernfemalebookownership.wordpress.com/2026/01/06/r... #HerBook #C17 #EarlyModern
Title page for 'Almanach de Milan pour l'année M.D.C.C.XIX. printed in Brussels by Jean Leonard.
Marbled covers.
Final(?) find of the year. Not all #Fragments are medieval! This unassuming almanach, printed in #Brussels for the year 1719, has simple marbled covers. They were reinforced with some waste paper.
Also, note the #HerBook provenance of Anna Maria de Lannoy.

This is such a good #HerBook read on the formidable Bathsua Makin. Showcasing her in a different light by the discovery of books attributed to her, it also touches on the female influence on children via book gifts, a subject I’ve been tipping away at via findings from our website!

More amazing work from @tamarajatkin.bsky.social on Bathsua Makin's books. I'm especially interested in the book that she inscribed "B. Makin." On the open market, without a scholar's eye, this is the type of inscription that could easily be mistaken for a man's. #HerBook

Delighted to have a brand new post from @tamarajatkin.bsky.social with some excellent research on more books owned by Bathsua Makin; the picture of Makin as a writer is becoming more complex with each discovery earlymodernfemalebookownership.wordpress.com/2025/11/24/b... #EarlyModern #HerBook
Portrait of Ellen “Nellie” Sophia Bill (née Woodford) as a young child. Photo supplied by Chris Kraus.
Title illustration of The Robber Kitten, showing an adult cat in a hat and a bow tie sitting, and a downtrodden-looking kitten holding a yellow hat. A gun and a stick are lying on the floor between them.
And finally, this endearing children's book about a kitten that decided to leave home and become a robber. It belonged to Nellie Woodford. Nellie was raised by her aunt Sophia after her mother Sarah Comfort's death. #bookhistory #herbook #womenshistory csherbook.hypotheses.org/2176
This book on friendship, surely also given as a gift, belonged to Sophia Woodford. #bookhistory #womenshistory #herbook
