My illustration of the Mermaid of the Magdalenes is a blue and black linocut print on 11” x 14” paper embellished with gouache. The upper left corner shows the red cliffs, beach, shipwreck and crate and tins on the shore. The upper right shows the meeting of all the fishes with many different species including the black lobster, merman, sardine, clam, starfish and more. In the centre are waves, clouds as ocean transitions to sky and a large tin of sardines. Across the bottom is the mermaid combing her hair looking longingly at the shore.

Final 2023 print for #ArtAdventCalendar: I wanted to include a Canadian folktale in #FolktaleWeek2023 so for “found” I illustrated the Mermaid of the Magdalenes. I liked the idea that this fairytale is about something as prosaic as finding tinned sardines.

My linocut print shows an Irish earthen mound or sídhe at night covered in dark green grass under a cyan blue starry sky with moon. The base of the mound is marked with grey rocks and there is a shaft-like entrance with post and lintel rocks that is black inside. Below this is a black region underground and then there’s a gathering of 6 human-like Aos Sí, 3 men and 3 women in long robes printed in a gradient of green and gold ink who appear to glow and have pointed ears. They wear flowers and branches and antlers in their hair. 11” x 14”

Another recent print from #FolktaleWeek2023 for #ArtAdventCalendar: the Sídhe, the Aos sí, the fair folk, the good people, or the people of the shee from Irish folklore, who live underground. You may know the banshee, or Bean sídhe or woman of the sídhe. In fact the very word Sídhe is… 🧵1/n

My linocut baku in a traditional tatami mat Japanese bedroom with paper screen walls, next to a child sleeping on a futon. The baku is a chimera in green with the claws of a tiger, body of a bear, cow’s tail, eyes and ears of a rhino and trunk like an elephant. It has golden curly cues on knees, elbows and eyebrows and red wavy lines emanating from its body. The comforter on the bed is printed on a blue and white patterned origami paper.

For #ArtAdventCalendar a #FolktaleWeek2023 print I made for ‘sleep’. The baku of Japanese myth was a chimera creature made from leftover parts, with the body of a bear, the claws of a tiger, the tail of a cow, the trunk & tusks of an elephant with the ears & eyes of a rhino, & it eats nightmares! 🧵

#folktaleweek2023 prompt 5: UNDERGROUND

Part 2

I took inspiration of an old medieval tale about dwarven king Goldemar kidnapped princess Hertlin.

She is of course upset, but Goldemar gets what's coming to him soon enough.

Folktaleweek Day 6: Illusion

The legend of Rocamadour tells the story of a castle that is often shrouded in fog and illusion. Travelers can get lost in the corridors and staircases of the castle, unable to find their way out.

While the mouse is trying to fall asleep, there's something happening deep under ground.

It's a mole, digging her way in an anxious rush. She find's that there is a house above her. Maybe someone will answer her call at this late hour?

Cartoon drawing of a little gray mouse in bed, with the moonlight shining through his bedroom window. A small shelf with a book and digital alarm clock are in the background, with the time being 10:45 on the clock. His old frayed scarf hangs above the shelf, next to a picture of him holding an award of some kind. The mouse just lays in bed, too consumed in thought to sleep.
