My Lino block print shows a night sky with moon and clouds and flying canoe full of paddling voyageurs over rolling countryside with fields and trees covered in snow and a church steeple in the foreground. The moon is covered with grey craters and shadows. The sky with scattered clouds is in a range of golden-green near the moon to minty bluish-green away from the moon. The foreground, canoe and its occupants are in black. The numbered 11”x14” print is titled “La Chasse-galerie” and signed Ele Willoughby 2024.
Bonne année! Happy New Year! Here’s my topical French Canadian folklore print I made for #FolktaleWeek2025: La Chasse-galerie!
The French Canadian folktale of the Chasse-galerie, or the Flying Canoe tells of some hardworking voyageurs in their timber camp, who miss their sweethearts back home, 🧵
My linocut print “The Maiden of the Dawn and the Firebird” on 11” x 14” Japanese paper shows the Maiden in dress and headdress on the flaming red bird (reminiscent of a peacock) against a cloud-spotted dawn sky in swathes of pink and cream. The Maiden’s Slavic style headdress is shaped in tiered teardrops and outlined in gold with radiating lines like the sun. Here dress in a gradient of orange through red is decorated with golden suns. She has yellow, pink and red ribbons in her hair.
Day 24 of #artAdventCalendar is The Maiden of the Dawn & the Firebird I made for #FolktaleWeek2025
A Prince is prophesied to fly away on the Firebird on his 15th birthday & marry the Maiden of the Dawn. So the King imprisons him in a luxurious tower prison & holds an elaborate 15th birthday, 🧵

Folktale Week: book.
Yes, I'm very behind with my Folktale Week art (as usual 😆). Here is the next part of the story.
The man's son continued to lay in a deathly sleep. The priest came and prayed over him but to no avail...

A hand of an anthropomorphic bear hovers over the open pages of a large book. An unrecognisable script can be seen on the paper. The image is divided diagonally by the bear's cloak. Behind the bear, rain falls outside the cave they are in. Dots of light illuminate the roof of their temporary shelter.
A hand of an anthropomorphic bear rests on the open pages of a large book. An unrecognisable script can be seen on the paper. Shards of light are eminating from the bear's fingers and the book. Dots of light, and chaotic lines frame the image, heightening the feeling something magical and otherworldly taking place.
A large explosion of light encapsulates the silhouette of an anthropomorphic bear wearing a cloak, and holding a staff. They are crouched on the ground, braced against the force of the explosion. A large book lies next to them on the ground, it's pages flapping wildly. Outside of the ball of light, almost horizontal rain intersects the dark trunks and branches of a forest of gnarly trees. Text in the lower right corners reads: "5. Charm"

News that the Snollygoster was hunting snails traveled quickly but not fast enough. As Snelda attempted to warn snails everywhere, she heard the echo footsteps behind her.

Seven frames telling the story of how the Princess Moon, sad for not knowing how to swim, envied the stars, until one of them fell to the ocean, when it discovered an old book of spells and a magic charm, which, with the help of her sisters in the sky, brought back. The Princess Moon attached the charm to her crown, learning how to swim instantaneously, and just before dawn when Brother Sun came to say hello.
Better late than never so... my #FolktaleWeek2025 entries gathered together, telling the story of the night the Princess Moon learned how to swim.

Storm. The last picture of #FolktaleWeek.
Was too busy being sad and forgot to post it in time. Storms in tales is invisible plotdriver. When they are in stories always something start happening, new character or twist
