Se a maioria dos filmes de Coppola dos anos 80 funcionam como uma investigação sobre a nostalgia de Hollywood, o mesmo acontece com "Cotton Club", que é, em muitos sentidos, um filme didático sobre as formas como o entretenimento e o capital/gangsterismo se misturam. Há duas histórias sobre artistas batalhando: Richard Gere, que se envolve com gângsteres antes de se tornar um astro de cinema, e Gregory Hines, um dançarino que trabalha no clube. A melhor maneira de ver o filme é por meio do recente "Encore cut" de Coppola. "Cotton Club" é essencialmente um retrato de um lugar em uma época, portanto, mais cenas significam que seu mundo chega a nós com mais força e é isso que o filme busca.
