For decades, the Moroccan regime has occupied large parts of Western Sahara. There, they oppress the Sahrawi population, and people disappear without charge for years in secret prisons. Journalists are beaten up in the streets, and journalists from other countries, NGOs, members of parliament and human rights activists are denied access to the occupied territories to prevent them from reporting from there. Nevertheless, German companies such as Lufthansa, Discover Airlines and TUI profit from flights to the occupied territories. Cities such as Dakhla and El Aaiún are filled with tourists, while the Sahrawi population suffers under occupation. Human rights are violated there on a daily basis under the eyes of the UN, European governments and, of course, German corporations. The Moroccan occupation regime also adorns itself with sustainability and climate awareness. It deliberately omits the fact that its wind farms and processing plants are located almost exclusively in the occupied parts of Western Sahara. And German corporations such as Siemens, which play a major role in the construction of these parks, also remain deliberately silent. Greenwashing is being carried out here on the back of a colony. In addition, Morocco is in permanent violation of the ECJ ruling of October 2024 and continues to exploit Western Sahara and its resources. But at the ITB,…

Shot by Jocelyn Saab in 1978, the film takes a deep dive both into the (geo)political, military, and economic situation surrounding the Moroccan and Mauritanian occupation of Western Sahara, as well as the lives, the organization, the tactics, the fighting and the ideology of numerous cadres of the Frente Polisario. The film captures various aspects of the complex political mosaic that was the Frente at the time: from its incipient anti-patriarchal critiques to its militants’ consciousness of the key role mineral extraction played in the occupation, passing through combats waged against Moroccan troops to the impact guerrilla warfare had in neighbouring cities and towns. As is now our custom, we invite you all to stay for a talk/discussion after the movie. The three-part exhibition deals with the resistance of Sahrawi women, the history of the occupation and the current political prisoners. We are showing the series of drawings ‘Remarkable Sahrawi Women’ by Gaëtan Pelatre, which highlights the strength, determination and central role of Sahrawi women in the resistance – in the refugee camps, the occupied territories and in the diaspora. In her comic ‘Enough Waiting’, Fine tells the story and background of the occupation in a very different and impressive way. Prints of this comic will be on display in the exhibition. The third part of the exhibition is dedicated to the human rights situation of the prisoners of Gdeim Izik, the largest Sahrawi protest camp that was crushed in 2010, with information materials compiled by the association ‘Hijas de Sagia’ (link: TikTok). Large-format information boards about the political prisoners will be on display. Through this diverse exhibition, we want to raise awareness on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the occupation of Western Sahara, tell a story of resistance and invite people to engage with this forgotten conflict. We will be showing Western Sahara Desert Fighters at 4pm, Life is waiting at 5pm, and Insumisas at 6pm. Insumisas will be followed by a short discussion. Gefühlt hatten sich alle Gruppen der Westsahara-Solidarität in der BRD schon lange aufgelöst, nur einige wenige – auch aus autonomen und internationalistischen Zusammenhängen – machten vereinzelt in den Nischen von NGOs weiter. Und ohne Genoss*innen aus anderen Ländern, zumindest hier in Berlin, wäre die Solidarität mit der Westsahara völlig unsichtbar geworden. Doch in den letzten Jahren ist viel passiert! Nach mehreren Solidaritäts-Reisen aus der BRD in die Geflüchteten-Camps der Sahrauis in Algerien haben sich bundesweit neue Gruppen und Netzwerke der Westsahara-Solidarität gegründet und zusammengeschlossen – vielfältig und engagiert; von anarchistisch bis kommunistisch. Schon länger, und nicht nur seit den massenhaften Protesten gegen den Gaza-Genozid, bekommen wir mit, dass Internationalismus und Antikolonialismus wieder integrale Bestandteile der Politik der meisten relevanten linken und linksradikalen Gruppen sind; und nicht nur bei Veranstaltungen, sondern auch bei Aktionen auf der Straße – besonders bei vielen Jugendlichen, die begonnen haben sich zu engagieren und zu organisieren. 👉 Mit Aktivist*innen der Westsahara-Solidarität wollen wir daher nicht nostalgisch zurückblicken. Sondern vor allem über die Hintergründe des neuen Antikolonialismus sprechen, und darüber, wie wir hier – in der imperialistischen Metropole – den Kampf der sahrauischen Befreiu…
