A color photo of a painting of three toreadors in a bull fighting ring. The toreadors are situated with one on the left, one on the right, and one in the center, and are each dressed in colorful traditional bullfighting costumes. The one in the center is trying to climb above the bullfighting ring’s fence towards the audience above. A little bit of the bull can be seen at the very bottom of the painting. The painting has warm colors with a rust colored fence. The painting is Eduoard Manet’s The Bullfight from The Frick Collection.

Exhibited at the 1864 Salon before he ever visited Spain, Manet cut the original into 2 smaller paintings, and reworked both, due to a harsh criticism. The Frick has the upper portion, which is now called “The Bullfight,” and includes the top of the bull. #art #Manet #painting #FrickCollection 🧵2/3

The sketch, believed to be nearly 300 years old, was found by an anonymous dumpster diver who initially had no idea of its historical significance.

Julia Floyd (1795–1859) was married in 1820 to the British statesman Sir Robert Peel, who twice served as Prime Minister of England and was an avid patron of Lawrence. The Frick portrait apparently was inspired by Rubens’ painting of Susanna Fourment known as the Chapeau de paille, which Peel had acquired in 1823. When Lawrence’s Lady Peel was first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1827, a critic claimed it to be among “the highest achievements of modern art.” Lawrence’s flamboyant and virtuoso style has come to epitomize the spirit of the Regency period.

Julia looks directly at the artist wearing a black wide brim hat with large brilliant vermillion feathers and a heavy elaborate crimson coat with white fur trim covering her elegant cream colored gown with large red flower pinned to the chest. Her left arm is folded against her stomach giving viewers a clear display of a large fancy gold bracelets and a giant ring on her wedding finger.

Mapping Provenance: Fragonard's Progress of Love As illustrated by the turbulent history of Fragonard’s Progress of Love series, the destiny of an artwork depends in large part on the taste and temperament of the client who commissioned it.

Journey of Fragonard's 'Progress of Love': 4,500+ miles! Louveciennes (1771) ➡️ Paris Louvre (1773) ➡️ Grasse Villa Maubert (1790) ⛴️ London (£62,000 to JP Morgan!) ⛴️ NYC. After historic 14-canvas reunion #FrickMadison, now home #FrickCollection #ArtHistory 🎨 https://buff.ly/4fgQ4Mo

Much like today, Venice in the eighteenth century was one of Italy’s must-see destinations, a key stop for Europeans embarking on the Grand Tour.

Installation view at Frick Madison of Francesco Guardi’s “Regatta in Venice” (ca. 1770).

No photos permitted, but the Barkley Hendricks exhibition at #frickcollection is frigging terrific—a great mixture of compelling portrait insight and aesthetic power from the late 1960s into early 80s. His use of textures and patterns, especially with white and “denim,” are just marvelous.
