As trade union affiliates of the General Federation of Trade Unions, we stand in support of all the workers facing redundancy at Morrisons Rathbones, especially members of our sister affiliate, the Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union (BFAWU). The Executive Committee of the GFTU, a federation of 26 trade unions, was appalled to hear that Morrisons Rathbones have put 400 workers at risk of redundancy in the run up to the festive period. We know that the Morrisons group continues to make substantial profits, in which context the threat of redundancy during a cost-of-living crisis is a shameful way to treat workers. We are aware that some of the workers have given 20 years' service at Rathbones and that the bakery plays an important role within the local community, something that Morrisons customers value.
We will continue to support BFAWU members, including supporting the petition and writing to the Morrisons board to stop these cuts. We believe Morrisons can reverse this decision and reverse the growing damage to its brand due to the way it is treating its staff. We do not accept that offering worse terms and conditions constitutes a way to settle this dispute and mitigate job cuts. We urge Morrisons to make a ‘U-turn' now and show its customers and the country that it will show the same commitment to workers that they have shown to the company for many years.
