This was the filming of the pilot, not the show itself. The pilot had to be retooled, partially reshot and recast after the pilot was made, so the show itself did not debut until 17 April 2011, almost eighteen months later.

The Internet informs me that FIFTEEN YEARS AGO this week I was hanging with these guys in Belfast.
Which means GAME OF THRONES started production just over fifteen years ago (they were in Malta and Scotland for ~3 weeks before going to Belfast).
