On #ThisDayInHistory in 1577, #TychoBrahe first observed the #GreatComet. His very precise measurement of this non-periodic comet's movement helped his student, #JohannesKepler, develop a theory of elliptical orbits. Brahe himself was unable to shake the dogma of geocentrism.

A digitized 35mm astrophoto of Comet Hale-Bopp (C/1995 O1) taken a few days after its perihelion passage on April 1, 1997. The image shows the comet's distinct dust and ion tails against a backdrop of stars. The photo was hand-guided for 10 minutes using a telephoto lens piggybacked on a small telescope.

I saw my 4th production of Natasha, Pierre, and the #GreatComet of 1812 yesterday afternoon. Excellent work for the most part, but I harbor serious doubts that this Dolokhov was ever in the Caucasus, or indeed killed the shah's brother.

In "Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812," the character of Andrey Bolkonsky is a human being, and not a mediocre 2011 drama about the budding romance of two photographers. This is a subtle nod to the fact that Andrey isn't "Here."
