One of my favorite geology stories for my #GSA2023 Hidden Geology talk. For this one I walked the audience through my step by step process to show where the dwarfs were actually digging diamonds out of and it turns out it was a … (click the link to find out)

Next #GSA2023 Hidden Geology is for Rescuers Down Under which takes place around abandoned opal mines. Australia produces 95% of the world’s precious opals. Mintabie, an opal mining town in the 1980’s, was abandoned after 1988, providing the film’s setting.

Next #GSA2023 Hidden Geology. This is the BEST tv episode in paleo history - Star Trek: Voyager’s “Distant Origin” where they meet a species descended from dinosaurs, the Voth. Not a new concept with Russell and Séguin proposing something similar back in 1982.

Still on #GSA2023

Enjoyed my time at #GSA2023 this past weekend.
The next entry on my #GSA2023 Hidden Geology talk was one I love. It is using Thoreau’s Walden in the creation of a bathymetric map of the pond based on his descriptions. It’s science in its purest form. Ask questions and get answers.

#gsa2023 conference swag - a throwback to one of my first research jobs. I worked on this study as an RA about 20 years ago!
I had a great time sharing our work on SDoH & cancer risk behaviors of older Nigerian men. #GSA2023
At a session of the Editors-In-Chiefs of the GSA journals where they are sharing tips for success. Takeaways are novelty, fit, and clarity are important. #GSA2023
As incoming Editor-In-Chief of the Psychological Sciences section of The Journals of Gerontology Series B, welcome to #GSA2023! Check out the Oxford University Press table when you get a chance!
At #GSA2023! Looking forward to learning the latest about aging research, policy, and practice.
Taking a break from #GSA2023 preconference to share our latest publication. Thank you Dr. Candi Nwakasi for leading this project. Let’s continue to amplify the experiences of cancer survivors. #Chokecancer #Globahealthequity

Excited to be attending my first #GSA annual scientific meeting in beautiful Tampa! 🧪 #Gerontology #SocialSciences #GSA2023 #academicSky
We had a great first day of the #GSA2023 preconference workshop titled “bringing focus on minoritized and HBCU-trained scholars and practitioners in the field of aging.” I am honored to have co-organized the precon with Drs. Tamara Baker & Candi Nwakasi.
My next #GSA2023 Hidden Geology post shifts to literature where I talked 1 of Hans Christian Andersen’s stories “The Rags” (1868) that mentioned the “ancient granite rocks of old Norway” and how ancient those rocks in Norway truly are (~3.5 billion years old).

More #GSA2023 Hidden Geological Lessons. This time art inspires paleontology. Gary Larson’s The Far Side comic first introduced a term for the tail spikes of a Stegosaurus, the thagomizer. A term that has since caught on in the scientific community.

My next #GSA2023 Hidden Geology was Edvard Munich’s The Scream where seeing a blood red sunset prompted the painting which may have been caused by the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa, an eruption that impacted global sunsets for months and temps for years.

The next Hidden Geological Lessons from #GSA2023 is Elton John’ “Honky Cat”.
“It’s like trying to find gold in a silver mine”, a remarkably common occurrence since they both form through precipitation from hydrothermal fluids surrounding a magma source.

My second example of Hidden Geological Lessons for #GSA2023 was America’s “A Horse With No Name” where the “desert has turned to sea”. A classic example of a transgressive sequence!

GSA + 3. The countdown begins... Sore throat post #GSA2023. Negative rapid test... 👀
For #GSA2023 I had talked about Hidden geological lessons in the media around us. Here was the first one from my talk. In Geology Through the Radio we have “Pompeii” by Bastille about the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius that destroyed the town of Pompeii. #geology

First conference as a prof went great! My student Parker did a fantastic job sharing his undergraduate thesis results at #GSA2023
I hope to have more to share about his work soon!
Reflecting on #GSA2023, some of the best talks I saw all conference were by ERCs, especially in the "Phylogenetic and Computational Approaches in Paleobiology" session.
From 2nd year grad students to postdocs, incredible stuff. The future is phylogenetic paleobiology & the future is now
LOLs from #GSA2023: asked in the exhibitor lounge "So what are you guys doing over there?" I explained our fluvial geomorphology in a box & fella replied "Ah, there was such a crowd I thought maybe you were running a craps game." 😆#emriver #geoscience #rivers #STEM
Today at #GSA2023, come see Sinjini Sinha discuss her research: FUNCTIONAL DIVERSITY OF LOWER JURASSIC MACROFAUNAL COMMUNITIES FROM MOROCCO 🇲🇦 gsa.confex.com/gsa/2023AM/m...
