Her communication tablet vibrates against the table, the screen showing the morning hours of 4am while it incessantly clacks on the hard surface. Her hand shoots out, fumbling to find the snooze button for a bit before peace returns back to her with a click.
The alarm fades and the screen goes back to its home screen.

Reina lifts her head up from the table, strands of her hair fall unceremoniously from her sweat slicked forehead. She yawns, then groans, softly, so she wouldnβt wake up the others in the drafting room whoβs in the same state as her.
She mushes her face, trying to get rid of the sleepiness and walks to the washroom.
Tap water runs down from the faucet, to the basin, its mirror-like surface reflects Reinaβs tired face. Bags under her purple eyes, unkempt red hair, maybe a hint of sand in her eyes or the trace of drool at her lips. Letβs hope she didnβt get that on the map she was working on.
She scoops some water with her hands, the splash of cold water against her face wakes her up like fresh heaven. It's the only good thing to come out of no heated tap water outside of the barracks.
After sheβs done washing her face, she wipes it off with a face towel from the closet and walks toward the coffee machine. No one survived the night huh. She absentmindedly thought, glancing at her fallen (sleeping) comrades as the coffee machine whirred to life.
With the increase of large-scale businesses and scientific experiments in the area, a lot of massive and landscape changing construction had to be done. For most people, it would mean just another line to their reports for the week. For Reina, she had to visit those places personally, coordinate with other inspectors such as safety inspectors, update their digital maps accordingly and then bring all that information home and edit the analog ones by hand with her team.
Why couldnβt they just print a new analog map? Even in a desolate life like this, humanity wants to expand and construct. Paper would easily run out if they kept printing a new map for every landscape change and so it falls on the cartography divisionβs elbow grease to cut down on the costs and manually edit them all for safekeeping copies.
Reina tries not to bad mouth the cheapskates as she lifts her mug off the machine, bringing it close to her lips before-

The home screen changed.

No time, even for coffee? She cries internally. She picks her mug up, leaving it near her fellow team memberβs table and grabs her blue necktie hanging by the door.
Time for another long day at work.
