May the Fourth Be With You: A Stoical Reflection

Each year on May 4th, the internet hums with lightsaber gifs, Yoda memes, and the now-sacred greeting: May the Fourth be with you. It’s a charming play on words, and a surprisingly enduring tradition for a franchise that began with one farm boy, one asthmatic villain, and one deeply questionable space cantina.

But if we’re going to borrow from the galaxy far, far away, I’d rather use the moment to reflect not on space opera theatrics—but on something quieter. Something more grounded.

Not the Force of destiny, dogma, or dramatic Force-chokes—but the deeper force:
The one that flows not through Jedi temples, but through everyday moments.
The force of presence. Of decency. Of sitting still beneath a tree with your dog, a good pen, and a clear night sky.

Galactic politics? Well, I’ve lived through enough earthly ones to recognize that a Senate is a Senate, whether on Coruscant or Capitol Hill. Too many Palpatines, not enough quiet walks. Too much noise, not enough knowing silence.

The truth is, you don’t need midichlorians to move mountains.
Sometimes, what’s needed is a willingness to listen.
To write what matters.
To speak less, but mean more.
To recognize that wisdom rarely shouts—but often scratches at the door like an old dog asking to go outside and sniff the wind.

Let the Force be whatever it is to you. For me, it’s awareness without agenda, compassion without cosmic strings attached, and the simple magic of a fountain pen that flows just right.

I’ll leave the space battles to the young and the restless.
I’m content to be the old robed guy under the tree, journaling while a Death Star slowly rusts in orbit with a For Sale sign dangling from its hull.

May the Fourth be with you.
And if not the Fourth, then perhaps a little peace, a little ink, and a little wonder.
