An advertising postcard for Dr Seth Arnold's Balsam, a 19th century laxative. The picture shows a bedbound invalid, wrapped in blankets. (It's in the folds of the blanket).
The Victorians loved a "puzzle card", an advert that was also a game, making people spend ages staring at an ad for cough syrup to try and spot a tiny bird like a sepia-toned Where's Wally? We have several examples in the museum collection, using play to push drugs.

Ein Inro - das ist ein kleines Behältnis, das mit einer Kordel am Kimono befestigt wird. Was ist auf dem Inro abgebildet? Auf einem go-Tischchen mit vier kurzen, sechseckig profilierten Füßen liegen Spielsteine aus weißem Bein und schwarzem Horn, ein Rauchset und zwei Behälter aus schwarzem Holz für die Spielsteine; der für die weißen Steine ist offen. Das Rauchset besteht aus einer Tabakstasche mit Horn-kanagu, einem zweiteiligen Pfeifenetui, beide aus poliertem tsugaru-nuri-Lack (mehrfarbiger Schichtlack), einer kleinen, beweglichen, hellblauen Glasperle als ojime an einem Silberdraht und aus einem manjû aus Buchsbaum mit schwarzem Hornknopf. Auf der Unterseite ist das himotôshi in Bein gefaßt Go ist das anspruchsvollste japanische Brettspiel. Auf 361 Feldern (19 x 19) mit je 180 schwarzen und weißen Steinen wird nach dem Prinzip der Einkreisung gespielt. In der Edo-Zeit wurde dieses Spiel vom Shôgunat gefördert, und es wurden jährliche Turniere veranstaltet. Das Netsuke ist ein kleines Meisterwerk nicht nur hinsichtlich der Einlegetechnik, sondern auch wegen der einfallsreichen Materialverwendung. Auf Grund der großen Ähnlichkeit mit dem von Welch und Chappell abgebildeten Stück ist diese Arbeit Sôichi zuzuschreiben. Bei dem von Lazarnick abgebildeten Stück, das von Sakurai Hôichi (1809-1859), einem Schüler des Hôjitsu (?-i872) aus Edo, stammen soll (die Signatur ist nicht abgebildet), muss es sich um eine Verwechslung oder einen Schreibfehler in Lazarnicks Quelle handeln. Sôichi, der vor allem mit Masken-Netsuke berühmt wurde, war einer der zahlreichen Schüler von Miyazaki Josô (1855-1910). Der realistische Stil dieses Netsuke mit den vielfältigen Einlagen ähnelt den Arbeiten von Suzuki Tökoku (1846-1931), einem Zeitgenossen von Sôichi.
Go ist das anspruchsvollste japanische Brettspiel. In der Edo-Zeit wurde dieses Spiel vom Shôgunat gefördert. Hier ist Go auf einem Netsuke, verbunden mit einem Rauchset, abgebildet. Alles zusammen wurde am Kimono befestigt. Mehr: sammlung-digital.lindenmuseum.de/de/objekt/ne... #GameMW #MuseumWeek
