ORIGINAL vintage 1950s oil on board painting titled "Shmoe" by Pacific Grove, California artist/ceramicist Harold Charles Landaker (1892-1966), and in the period wood frame. This is a cheerful and vividly painted artwork, and I can't help but feel that the artist liked Shmoe a lot, and that he was probably a good friend from the artists circus days! Here's a fascinating but short biography of the artist that I found online:

Harold Charles Landaker was born in Ohio on December 12, 1892 and studied at an early age at the Art Institute of Chicago, where he met his future wife, Mabel Holtz. For 15 years the couple traveled painting circus posters and wagons, as well as designing various entertainment sets. In 1940, Harold journeyed to Southern California to work on posters for the Orange Show and decided to remain there, joining the art department at MGM studios. In 1946, he moved his family to the Monterey Peninsula and settled in the small community of Pacific Grove, where they were very active in the local art scene. Landaker was a long time member of the prestigious Carmel Art Association. Known for his whimsical humor, he frequently depicted many different kinds of animals, circus life, and birds in his works. Later in his career he turned to painting landscapes of the Monterey Peninsula, and he died in Monterey, California on
November 6, 1966.

This artwork measures 12.75" by 15" at outside edges of the frame by about 1.25" thick. Signed at front as shown, and with title at back "Shmoe" along with some other markings, and artist signature at back as well. Excellent vintage condition with no damage or loss to the painting itself, and only very slight wear at outer edges to the frame as shown - please view the photos, read the description, and ask all questions prior to purchase. I am open to reasonable offers from serious buyers.

SUPERB vintage 1980s 90s original pastel on paper by California artist Hal Crécy from the LA area. In the original gilt wood frame and under glass, this artwork is beautifully preserved and is one of the best by him that I have seen! Very colorful and a closeup of the clown who is smiling and really beautifully done! Also, the artwork is soft visually with subtle gradations from color to color which is a characteristic of the pastel technique. Many of the artworks by this artist that I have seen the clowns are unhappy or in predicaments, or honestly not appealing artworks to me personally, although I am a fan of the genre. However, this one really speaks to me, and has been in my personal collection of clown art for decades. This is the only pastel that I have seen by the artist as most of his artworks that I have found for sale are oil on canvas. Measures 23.5" by 19.5" at outside edges of the frame. Sight measurements of the artwork itself is 8.5" by 11.5". Signed at front bottom right as shown, "Hal Crécy". In excellent vintage condition with just fine light wear to the outside edges of the frame with the artwork enclosed and with glass at front thus nearly pristine I would say though I havent' opened it up myself - please view the photos, read the description, and ask all questions prior to purchase. I am open to reasonable offers from serious buyers.

SURREALIST signed Flesly and dated 1957 original oil on board Clown contemplating a Butterfly painting in the period blond wood frame. A big smile on his face, a cone-shaped cap with feathers, and with a big collar framing the face, the clown contemplates a large butterfly that has alighted on his hand. Such a unique and intensely weird painting, and one that has been in my collection for about 40 years! At the outside edges the frame measures 28.5" by 24.5" and is about 2" thick. Signed at front, "Flesly" and dated "'57" for 1957 as shown. Though I haven't been able to discover any biographical information about the artist, the artwork speaks for itself, and is a really showpiece on any wall! No doubt of American origin, and I'm certain that the blond wood frame is the original as well. Dog shown in last photo is not included in sale. Excellent vintage condition with no damage or loss to the painting itself but slight wear and very small spots of discoloration to the wood frame as shown - please view the photos, read the description, and ask all questions prior to purchase. I am open to reasonable offers from serious buyers.

I'm a big fan of 'clown' art - probably comes from being terrified of them as a small child first time at the circus...
