Underwater photo carousel showing three giant trevallies swimming over a coral reef. The fish are large and muscular with silvery bodies and dark markings. One trevally dominates the foreground while the other two move through the frame behind it. The reef below is rocky with scattered corals, set against the deep blue water.

Patrolling the blue in full force! 🔥 These three giant trevallies (GTs) were on the hunt at Farikede, cruising the reef like true apex predators. Their powerful presence and intense focus made the whole dive feel electric! ⚡️

There was a snafu with the boat this morning that kept us off the water, so I decided to enlist my father into taking pictures of GT lures for an article I’m writing.

At 170cm and 80kg max, Giant Trevally is a chonky thing. And being big and fast allowed GT to be apex predator in and around coastal and reef waters around Indian and Pacific Ocean.

Not only big, GTs are aggressive. So aggressive they will ram blacktip reef sharks, often resulting in shark being dead. And if it isn't enough, GT around Farquhar Atoll has a certain habit of catching sooty tern fledglings learning to fly... on the air. Yes. They will leap out of the water and grab tern mid-air.

A 58 kegger caught on an urpekari. This fish was resuscitated with the boga by slowing moving the boat forward to force water over its gills.
I couldn’t resist jumping in for the release.

A chunky banger for a client. Being in the water with these fish is very exhilarating. This one wanted to let me know what it thought of me 😂
