The same spider, this time posing on the edge of a table. He is facing forward, and his thick spinnerets almost look like a little cartoon bow at this angle.

Macro view of a ground spider on rough tan stone. The frame is tight on the head and front legs. The spider is reddish brown with a darker abdomen. A cluster of small glossy eyes sits on the top of the head, each catching a pinpoint highlight like tiny beads. Fine hairs cover the legs and face. The front legs angle forward and show clear joints and bristles, with a few tiny droplets near a tip. The body runs diagonally from left foreground to right background. The background is a smooth warm brown blur. Lighting is soft and even, and depth of field is shallow, with the eyes and mouth parts crisp and the rear of the body fading into blur.

Ground spider, family Gnaphosidae. Take a close look at the eyes. They shine like tiny gems thanks to reflective layers that boost boost low vision light and may sense polarized light for navigation.

Nomisia sp. ♀
The spider is seen frontally but from a high perspective, so as to see the whole body. The color varies from light gray to beige, with whitish spots on the opisthosoma. The legs are long and robust, with some black spines.

Setaphis sp. ♂
The image is a little out of focus and the details of the spider are not very clearly visible, but you can appreciate the elongated body of almost black color and the legs that have the peculiarity of being black near the body and almost orange on the tarsus and part of the metatarsus. The first pair of legs, moreover, is slightly more robust than the others. It's a very fast spider!

Monday Spider: My work place, Kumpula Campus of University of Helsinki, is surrounded by lush vegetation. Inspired by a BioBlitz event I collected some spiders there. Here’s the first report of that catch: Haplodrassus silvestris male. #gnaphosidae
