A tiny set of uilleann (pronounced ILLin) pipes -- a type Irish bagpipe -- rests on a stool on a section of rustic wood flooring depicting a scene from a traditional Irish music session. This is a complex instrument with a chanter and a stock including three drones and three regulators, which each have a series of metal keys on them. On the floor next to the stool is a set of bellows that are used to inflate the bag by strapping it around the player's torso. Using one elbow to operate the bellows and the other to control the bag pressure (while playing melody on the chanter and accompanying chords on the regulators with the wrist) is what earned this instrument the name 'uilleann' pipes, meaning 'elbow' pipes.
