He is best known for his books Of Mice and Men, East of Eden, and his masterwork, The Grapes of Wrath. Steinbeck grew up in poverty and saw his family struggle. He made his way to New York where his writing was considered forget- table, then ran out of money and headed back home to California. With housing and financial support from those closest to him, he kept writing - eventually churning out his first successful novel Tortilla Flat.
Throughout Steinbeck’s work, it’s clear that he knew the toll of being poor. In 1939, The Grapes of Wrath offered an unsparing look at the immiseration of millions of Americans. It won the National Book Award, the Pulitzer Prize, and was cited by the Swedish Committee that named Steinbeck the recipient of the 1962 Nobel Prize for Literature.
