During the breeding season, it displays a distinctive black crest on its head, which gives it its name. Its body has a white belly and neck, with the upperparts being dark brown or black. The eyes are red. Outside the breeding season, the crest is less prominent, and the overall plumage appears more muted. Three subspecies are recognised.
