Beautifully detailed oil painting with classical scene with romantic-esque brushwork and details by unknown artist. Painting has darkened with age and been professionally cleaned to bring back some of the light tones. The scene is likely a depiction of the Death of Agamemnon. In the center of the composition stands a woman in fine clothes, likely Clytemnestra. To her right is a man dressed in soldiers’ clothes, presumably Aegisthus, who has his knife drawn on a man wearing a simple tunic, Agamemnon. Behind them, another tunic-clad man is drawing a short sword. Between the woman and the men is a brazier with a lit fire. To the left and behind the woman is a crowd looking on with startled expressions. Looking over this scene is a shadowed statue or figure of Artemis, identifiable by the bow and arrow she is holding and the crescent moon shape on the top of her head. The background of the painting features geometric shapes and patterns, giving the sense of internal architecture.
