It all started in 1867 with William Seward, a man who clearly viewed the world map as a personal shopping list.

Small, colorful homes (orange, blue, green) climb a grassy hill in the Greenlandic tundra, which is covered in green arctic grass. Two dog sleds with ropes sit on a rock in the foreground. The sky is bright blue with no clouds. From Wiki: The Greenland Dog (Kalaallit Qimmiat) is a large breed of husky-type dog kept as a sled dog. They were brought from Siberia to North America by the Thule people 1,000 years ago, along with the Canadian Eskimo Dog. Today, the breed is considered nationally and culturally important to Greenland and efforts are made to safeguard its purity. As the population has been falling (c. 15,000 in Greenland as of 2016), a number of projects have been initiated in an attempt of ensuring that Greenland's dog sledding culture, knowledge and use, along with the breed itself, are not lost.
Oqaatsut, Greenland, July 18, 2024, 8 am. Dogsleds are the primary mode of transport in the winter. In the summer, dogsleds were frequently seen "parked" near homes. (part of my non-felon-Greeland series) #GreenlandIsntForSale
