A horned grebe in its grey and white non-breeding plumage with bright red eye is swimming on turquoise ocean water. The bird is swimming toward the camera and has its head turned slightly to the left (its right).

This is one of a pair of Horned Grebes that ventured quite close to me while I was lurking on a floating dock at a commercial fishing wharf.

A horned grebe in its grey and white non-breeding plumage with bright red eye is swimming on turquoise ocean water. The bird is facing partly away from the camera and to the right and is looking back over its shoulder at the camera.

I only see Horned Grebes in winter, so I never see the full splendour of their colourful breeding plumage. The little splash of brown on this guy is all I get.
