‘Geingob told me not to support NNN’– Hauwanga Businessman Ben Hauwanga claims that former president Hage Geingob had told him to stop campaigning for president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah in the run up to Swapo elective congress in 2022. Hauwanga made the allegations in an interview with Omulunga Radio on Friday. Before he mentioned Geingob’s name, Hauwanga said that he would tell the truth as it would set him free. “During the campaign, I was called by president Hage Geingob and then he told me that I should not campaign for Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah. He told me to support his preferred candidate,” he said. Hauwanga said that although Geingob told him to stop, he continued campaigning for Nandi-Ndaitwah. The businessman was being interviewed about allegations made against him by Ongwediva resident Potgieter Vilho in voice recordings that were circulated on social media. In some of the audios, Vilho alleged that Hauwanga’s entity was contracted by the Angolan Ministry of Defence and was paid millions in US dollars and Hauwanga refused to give him (Vilho) his share. Hauwanga dismissed these claims as untruthful and politically motivated. Hauwanga was one of Nandi-Ndaitwah’s campaigners in the run-up to the 2022 Swapo elective congress. In 2022, some of Nandi-Ndaitwah’s delegates were accommodated at apartments owned by Hauwanga at Omusheshe village east of Ongwediva in the Oshana region. Following Vilho’s claims, Hauwanga has since filed a N$500 000 lawsuit against Vilho in the High Court. In the court document, Hauwanga alleged that Vilho’s statements depicted him as being a dishonest businessman, a land grabber, stupid, dishonest, a beneficiary of corruption and not worthy of being associated with Nandi-Ndaitwah’s political campaign. Hauwanga is also claiming that Vilho alleged he owed money to Vilho, and alleged Hauwanga used the money owed to Vilho in 2022 in Nandi-Ndaitwah’s political campaign against then prime minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila and environment and tourism minister Pohamba Shifeta. Hauwanga is asking the court to order Vilho to pay him N$500 000 because of these comments, and to declare Vilho’s remarks false and defamatory. Sadzu Road renamed in honour of former Namibian president Hage Geingob  Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, Lusaka, Zambia, 16 May 2025 It gives me pleasure to address this auspicious occasion, which is of great historical significance.  Namibia and Zambia share resilient and longstanding bonds of friendship. The people and the government of Zambia, under the leadership of president Hakainde Hichilema, are once again reinforcing the deep ties between our sister countries by renaming Sadzu Road after Hage Gottfried Geingob, the third president of the Republic of Namibia, who sadly died on 4 February 2024.  We thank the government and the people of Zambia for the support during the difficult time of mourning our sitting president. President Geingob spent over 14 years of his life in Zambia after he was appointed in 1975 by the president of Swapo, comrade Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma, to become the director of the United Nations Institute for Namibia (Unin). Unin was graciously hosted by this great city of Lusaka on this road. Under the leadership of the late Geingob, Unin trained thousands of Namibians to later manage the affairs of an independent Namibian government.  The renaming of Sadzu Road to Dr Hage G Geingob Road is therefore a gesture of affection that further ignites the affinities that exist between our two nations. Lusaka has always been a second home to Namibians. Zambia as a country hosted and extended support to many African liberation movements, including Swapo, the ANC, the MPLA, Zanu PF, Zapu, and Frelimo.  Lusaka was the capital from which many of our liberation movements planned and operated freely to overthrow the colonial regimes in our region. The late president Geingob is one of those freedom fighters who embraced Lusaka as a stronghold of the struggle against the colonial apartheid regime in Namibia. The renaming of this road after president Geingob gives new stature to our long-standing friendship with Zambia – a friendship that was forged during our long and bitter struggle for freedom. In closing, I once again express our deepest appreciation to president Hichilema, the city of Lusaka and the people of Zambia for unanimously renaming Sadzu Road after our revered leader, Hage Gottfried Geingob. Indeed, Lusaka is a city of generosity. Namibians are proud that one of their own, Dr Hage G Geingob, who was once a freedom fighter in this city, has a street named after him, and in celebration of his legacy. Zikomo kwambiri, I thank you. Geingos praises Nandi-Ndaitwah after attending street renaming in Zambia Former first lady Monica Geingos says she was honoured by president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s invitation to attend a street renaming ceremony in Lusaka, Zambia. Two roads in the city were recently renamed – one in honour of founding president Sam Nujoma, and another after former president Hage Geingob. Geingos described Lusaka as her late husband’s second home, saying it shaped his leadership and statesmanship skills. “As a meeting place of African intellectuals, political luminaries and freedom fighters, president Geingob connected with Africa’s best brains, some of whom followed him to Namibia, proving that ideas and solidarity transcend borders,” a statement issued on Geingos’ behalf says. “Ms Geingos was grateful to have extended her heartfelt gratitude to his excellency president Hakainde Hichilema for bestowing this meaningful posthumous honour on president Hage G Geingob. “She also thanks president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah for her leadership, and for the invitation to be part of this deeply significant occasion,” the statement reads. Geingos also met with the first lady of Zambia, Mutinta Hichilema, discussing youth development and empowerment. Zambia to name Lusaka road after late president Geingob Kasama Road in Lusaka, Zambia, is set to be unveiled in honour of the late Namibian president Hage Geingob on Friday, according to Zambian media. Former first lady Monica Geingos has confirmed her attendance at the ceremony, stating that Geingob never tired of telling everyone that Zambia was his second home. Geingob lived in Zambia where he headed the United Nations Institute for Namibia in Lusaka from its inception in 1976 until his return to Namibia from exile in 1989. “As the first prime minister of a newly independent Namibia, Hage ensured Namibian government vehicle registrations were ‘GRN’ as a nod to the ‘GRZ’ plates in Zambia. If you ever wondered where ‘One Namibia, One Nation’ came from, it was inspired by Zambian president Kenneth Kaunda’s independence slogan of ‘One Zambia, One Nation’,” Geingos says. Zambian politician Joseph Kalimbwe describes Geingob as not just a Namibian president, but a son of Lusaka “who formed a long line of Southern African Development Community presidents who lived in our city and spoke our language.” The post Zambia to name Lusaka road after late president Geingob appeared first on The Namibian.

Central bank issues N$270m in commemorative notes The Bank of Namibia (BoN) says it has printed commemorative banknotes valued at N$270 million in honour of the country’s past presidents, including former president Hage Geingob. This includes five million N$30 notes introduced in 2020 to celebrate 30 years of independence and Namibia’s presidential leadership since 1990, as well as two million N$60 notes released this year to celebrate Geingob’s life and legacy. BoN spokesperson Kazembire Zemburuka says 677 000 of the N$60 banknotes, representing 33.9% of the total number printed, have been in circulation since March. “A total of 6 853 pieces have been procured globally as collectors’ items, which equates to 0.3%. It is worth noting that the N$60 has only been in circulation for a month,” he says. In comparison, 32 735 of the N$30 note, or 0.7% of the total issued, have been acquired globally by collectors. Zemburuka attributes the limited domestic uptake of the commemorative notes to Namibia’s small financial market. “Namibia does not have a large collector footprint, with most collectors being from South Africa and the international market. Namibians obtain the banknote at commercial banking halls, hence making it challenging to track local collectors,” he says. The central bank says very few of the N$30 notes have been returned due to damage, attributing this to the durability of the material used. “The N$30 banknote is made of polymer, which has a longer lifespan compared to cotton banknotes and is more resistant to wear and tear. This is evident in the statistics, since to date only 1.2% (60 000 pieces) have been received back by the bank as damaged banknotes,” Zemburuka says. No reprints are planned for either of the commemorative denominations. “Commemorative banknotes are usually issued in limited quantities to celebrate a significant event, person or milestone and are therefore mostly printed as a once-off print,” Zemburuka says. Nandi-Ndaitwah pays tribute to Nujoma and Geingob on Swapo’s 65th anniversary President Netumbo Ndandi-Ndaitwah paid tribute to the late founding president Sam Nujoma and the country’s third president, Hage Geingob, to mark the party’s 65 anniversary on Saturday. The party was founded on 19 April 1960. “As a party, we continue to remember two of our great leaders, our third president Hage Geingob, who passed on 4 February 2024, and our founding president, father of the Namibian nation, and the leader of Namibian revolution, Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma, who left us on 8 February,” she said in her statement. Nandi-Ndaitwah said Geingob and Nujoma’s contributions to the Namibian nation “will be etched in our hearts and minds.” “Their bravery and resilience have laid the foundation for peace, political stability, and the rule of law that continue to shape our nation. May their legacy continue to inspire us and the generation to come,” she said. In the same statement, the president also thanked Namibians for once again trusting the party to lead the country for another five years. “Your overwhelming support during the 27 November 2024 presidential and National Assembly elections has reaffirmed our collective commitment to build a prosperous Namibia. Together, we have forged a path of hope, solidarity, freedom, and justice for all citizens,” she said. The president said as a country that honours the past, it must also look to the future with renewed determination. She added that Swapo’s 2002 congress resolution on gender equality, advocating for a 50/50 representation of women and men within its structures, demonstrates the party’s commitment to inclusivity and empowerment. “Our ‘Zebra Style’ in all our structures serves as a beacon of progress and a trendsetter in Africa, confirming that true transformation must involve every citizen in our quest for equity and justice,” she said. She, however, added that much still needs to be done. “Let us harness the spirit of hope and trust that we have built over the past 65 years, and further strengthen our bonds as we face the future with certainty,” she said. Rehoboth honours Geingob with street naming The Rehoboth Town Council has announced plans to name the town’s long street, previously known as the D1210, to Dr Hage Geingob Street. This was announced by councillor Jacky Khariseb during an information-sharing session on Friday. A ceremony is expected to take place soon. During his 2014 presidential campaign visit, former president Hage Geingob expressed his desire to see improvements at the town’s Blok E. The council has since tarred the road from the cemetery past Rehoboth High School to Blok E. “Geingob shared that he would love to one day see it as equal to the rest of the town by improving Blok E too,” Khariseb said. In addition to honouring Geingob, the council has approved renaming Church Street, Rehoboth’s longest street, to Captain Hans Diergaardt Street. This decision recognises the Baster captain’s contributions, including providing housing for various ethnic groups. “He provided housing to other ethnic groups that today are called Hans Diergaardt houses,” Khariseb said. Both street names aim to preserve Rehoboth’s history while celebrating leaders who shaped its community. The post Rehoboth honours Geingob with street naming appeared first on The Namibian.

N$60 Commemorative Banknote: Honouring the Lifeand Legacy of one of Namibia’s Sons of the Soil On 5 March, the Bank of Namibia unveiled a poignant tribute to former president Hage Geingob with the launch of a commemorative N$60 banknote celebrating his life and legacy. This unique banknote transcends its function as legal tender and lauds Geingob for his remarkable contributions to Namibia’s political, economic and social landscape over six decades. It is evident that his vision and dedication to Namibia has left an indelible mark on the nation. HONOURING A LEGACY Central banks around the world are known to issue commemorative banknotes to highlight significant events, figures or cultural heritage. The N$60 banknote commemorating the life and legacy of Geingob is no different. The denomination was chosen to symbolise the six decades Geingob devoted to Namibia. From his early activism in the 1960s to his leadership role as president of Namibia, a role he fulfilled until his death. Geingob was instrumental in forging the country’s identity. As chief architect of our Constitution, he ensured that principles of inclusivity, accountability and transparency were fundamental elements in what is now recognised as one of the world’s most respected constitutions. During his tenure as president, Geingob’s leadership was further characterised by a transformative agenda in renewable energy and socio-economic inclusivity, and these elements, together with his dedication to public service, have been transposed onto the N$60 commemorative banknote. SYMBOLISM AND DESIGN The N$60 commemorative banknote is printed on polymer, a material chosen for its durability and longevity compared to cotton. This substrate also enables advanced security features such as the transparent windows, which enhance the banknotes’ resistance to counterfeiting. From a design perspective, the N$60 note is rich in symbolism with key design elements, including the portrait of Geingob, see-through windows featuring his image and the Independence Memorial Museum. Both these windows offer a glimpse into Namibia’s history. Furthermore, state-of-the-art security features like raised ink and colour-shifting elements on the front of the banknote provide added security. Designed for inclusivity, a key leadership trait of Geingob, the banknote features a tactile element for the visually impaired: a circle of 12 raised dots. The phrase “Forward ever, backward never”, taken from Geingob’s 2023 new year’s message, captures his commitment to fostering a sense of inclusivity, unity and forward thinking for all Namibians. All of these elements, combined with the advanced security features, make the new N$60 banknote well blended. DUAL PURPOSE Commemorative banknotes are distinguishable from regular banknotes by their unique designs, themes, limited issuance, higher potential collectible value, and temporary circulation. While the N$60 commemorative banknote will circulate as legal tender, its limited print run also makes it a sought-after collector’s item, treasured by both numismatists and those seeking a connection to Geingob’s legacy. This dual purpose highlights its significance as both a functional currency and a commemorative piece celebrating a national hero. The bank recognises this appeal, given Geingob’s standing as a respected pan-African and an international figure. The N$60 commemorative banknote is more than just a piece of currency and a means of exchange; it is a tribute to Geingob’s enduring legacy and a testament of his contributions to Namibia’s journey towards unity and prosperity. The N$60 banknote should serve as an inspiration for future generations to uphold his vision of a prosperous and unified nation. As Namibians hold this banknote in their hands, they are reminded not just of its monetary value, but also of the invaluable legacy of Geingob, who has now been immortalised. * Cindy Phillipus is the Bank of Namibia’s deputy director of currency and banking.
