A year ago I completed five days of images capturing #Asteroid #Flora passing through #NGC3628 the #HamburgerGalaxy This was a line of sight effect; Flora is in our solar system and was ~235 million km away, but the galaxy is 35 million light years away! Tap to expand!

5 day animation of #AsteroidFlora in #conjunction with #NGC3628 the #HamburgerGalaxy in the #LeoTriplet inverted/mono version. Imaged over 5 nights in April 2025. It looks like Flora passes through the galaxy but it's a line of sight effect #Asteroid #Galaxy

A stunning telescopic image of NGC 3628, also known as the Hamburger Galaxy, an edge-on spiral galaxy approximately 35 million light-years away in the constellation Leo. Its warped disk, punctuated by dark dust lanes, spans 100,000 light-years and is part of the Leo Triplet galaxy group. The image showcases its intricate structure against a backdrop of distant stars.

Stunning image of the Leo Triplet (NGC 3628, M66, M65) galaxies in the constellation Leo. These three spiral galaxies, approximately 30 million light-years away, exhibit different orientations and show signs of gravitational interaction, including tidal tails and warped disks. NGC 3628 (Hamburger Galaxy) is seen edge-on, while M66 and M65 show their spiral structures. The image covers a vast area of space, spanning over one degree across (two full moons).

Animation of #Asteroid #Flora approaching #NGC3628 the #HamburgerGalaxy in the #LeoTriplet 7th, 8th & 9th April 2025. Imaged from #Oxfordshire with a #WilliamOptics 70mm refractor + #Canon1100D Moonlight has been a real pain!

Here in Australia the #asteroid #Flora misses the core of the #HamburgerGalaxy - in this animation, north is down (as in where I am) and each frame is 9pm Sydney time/date. Since Flora is 'only' 237m kilometres away and NGC3628 is 45m light years further, parallax makes a difference! πŸ”πŸ§ͺ

This week #Asteroid #Flora passes across #NGC3628 the #HamburgerGalaxy in the #LeoTriplet. This video shows its position from 8th-13th April. The galaxy is faint so moonlight will make it difficult visually, but it's still a decent imaging target. This is just a line of sight effect!

Steven Bellavia in Staunton River State Park, Virginia, captured this view of the #Hamburgergalaxy (NGC 3628) last Wednesday. Thank you, Steven! πŸŒŒπŸ”πŸ“ΈπŸ”
