When Kexing doesn't say anything, he continues. "The damage from before isn't going to get better and it's definitely going to get worse and probably spread to the other eye. Something called sympathetic ophthalmia." he shrugs and drops his gaze to the cup in his hands. "Better to do it now so I don't lose both." He thinks it should feel better to say it out loud. Make it feel more real or something, but it doesn't. It's just words. But maybe "feeling real" isn't actually a thing, "You're not surprised about it." "Not really. It's been an open possibility ever since the injury. They just decided today." Another moment of silence while Wen Kexing waits for the answer to the question he didn't ask, and so Han Ying answers it anyway. "I was going to say something eventually. I just— you're not responsible for me, you know? I didn't say anything when Zishu was still so sick, we all had more important things to do then. My non-emergency wasn't the priority, and then, well, really, there was no crisis for me. Just a series of slow events. I'm handling it."
You're handling it." Wen Kexing repeats, a question and a judgement all at once. He doesn't approve of his people handling things without him. Even though Han Ying isn't his people. Not like that. He's Kexing's husband's attack dog and sometimes their sexual chewtoy, but he's not Kexing's responsibility. He doesn't want that. And that's the thing about Han Ying. He's an incredible hypocrite. He hates being cared for. It makes his skin crawl and his bones want to leap out of his skin for being too crowded. He's not like Zishu who grouches but secretly loves being fussed over by the right person, in fact he hates it more it's someone he cares about. And it's not that he hates being cared about either, he has people he loves and people who love him in their own fashion. But the physical act of being looked after is a thing he avoids to the death (of his eye apparently). It's a hypocrisy of course, given the way he's shaped his own life around Zhou Zishu, but it's his very own hypocrisy and he's not giving it up.
