Her story is one of thwarted love, royal paranoia, and a haunting that whispers rather than screams.

At Chillingham Castle in Northumberland, visitors have reported hearing the sound of a boy crying behind the stonework. In the 1920s, a child’s skeleton was discovered bricked into the wall — still dressed in rags.
The past has a habit of resurfacing.

Leicester is a city of ghosts. From the chilling calm of Belgrave Hall to strange whispers in the Guildhall, its past remains disturbingly close.

Stopped at Buckland Abbey on the way back from a week ago Cornwall. Once a monastery, later Drake’s home—rebuilt in 3 days (with the Devil’s help?). His cursed ghost still haunts Dartmoor. Listen closely… you might hear Drake’s Drum beating.

Last week I stepped into the shadows of Bodmin Jail… and I’m not sure I came out the same. Built in 1779, it housed Cornwall’s worst. Executions, hauntings, and echoes linger. Would you dare visit? #BodminJail #HauntedBritain #DarkHistory
An Army of Ghosts. In the summer of 1812, villagers witnessed a full army of ghostly soldiers marching across the misty moors of Haverah Park. Some wore medieval armour, others Civil War tunics — all vanished into the twilight.

Final week of #HauntedBritain we discussed a selection of works around mythology of the Whitechapel murders, with a particular focus on consumption/ dark tourism:
-Jack the Ripper: A Virtual London Walk, Tours by Foot, Guide (April 2021)
- Ep. 1 of Ripper Street
- Ep 1 of Whitechapel
This week on #HauntedBritain was Peter Akroyd's "Dan Leno and the Linehouse Golem" (1994), or in the US "The Trial of Elizabeth Cree".
Students were perplexed but enjoyed how Karl Marx, George Gissing, Oscar Wilde and real places were blended with the fictions of the Victorian serial killer.
Next up on #HauntedBritain was the deliciously playful "His Bloody Project" by Graeme Burnet Macrae.
Very much enjoyed discussions on the performance of authenticity & the way an imagining of mid-c19th Scotland is constructed through different kinds of sources, all of which seem to be undermined 😈
Final unit for #HauntedBritain module is Neo-Victorian Crime Narratives.
Started today w. Kate Summerscale's The Suspicions of Mr Whicher (2008): the ethics of writing and reading the non-fiction historical crime novel, what seems to haunt the c19th British public & what haunts Summerscale?🕵♀️📚
"Mobile phones won't work down there and it's easy to get turned around."
A youth worker's field trip.
A Cold War shelter.
Seven missing children.
Three hours of lost time.
Some doors should stay sealed.

We finished off this unit of #HauntedBritain on the Steamge, Magickal, and Uncanny with Aaronovitch's "Rivers of London" (2011), discussing the intersection of Nation / Supernatural/ Policing and the Law via riots, Punch & Judy, gothic underground and more.
Next unit is neo-Victorian crime fiction!
This week on #HauntedBritain was Hilary Mantel's excellent "Beyond Black" (2005), talking about Spiritualism and trauma; Diana's ghost and the iconography of white femininity; the M25 ortibal as purgatory; the fallacy of "homeland" and security and more!
This week on #HauntedBritain we discussed Jeremy Dyson's The Haunted Book (2012), talking meta-fiction (there were some surprises about genre!); ghostly guidebooks (including my own copy of Hippiskey Coxe); detective fiction; troubled masculinity, and more! 🖤👻
This week in my #HauntedBritain module we studied @dannyrobins.bsky.social #TheWitchFarm thinking about temporality, hierarchies of knowledge, sound effects, Welsh devolution and more! 👻❤️
We then had an optional screening of #Ghostwatch (1992) where the lights went out halfway through 😁
I have taught The Wicker Man four times in last two days and one of the clips played in class for close-reading was where Howie visits the school and by God that Maypole song is haunting me
