A very small reef fish perches on bright crimson branching coral underwater.

Its body is compact and slightly flattened from side to side. The skin is pale cream to white, overlaid with orange and rust-colored spots and short stripes. The fish’s head is blunt and rounded, with a short mouth and very large greenish eyes that dominate its face.

The pectoral fins are spread wide and stiff, gripping the coral branches like hands. Thin, transparent fins extend outward on each side, while delicate feather-like filaments rise from the dorsal fin along the fish’s back.

The surrounding coral appears soft and fuzzy, with dense red and pink polyps that nearly engulf the fish, helping it blend into the reef. The background fades into dark purples and browns, emphasizing the hawkfish’s bright coloration and still, watchful posture.

Behavior

Pixy hawkfish are:
	Ambush predators
	Highly site-attached
Rarely seen swimming for long distances

Typical behaviors include:
Sitting motionless for minutes at a time
Making sudden lunges at passing prey
Returning to the exact same perch

Diet
	Small shrimp
	Amphipods
	Copepods
	Tiny crabs
	Fish larvae

They rely on vision rather than speed, striking only when prey is close.

⸻

Habitat & Range
	Indo-Pacific region
	Red Sea to Central Pacific
	Found on:
	Branching stony corals
	Soft corals
	Gorgonian sea fans

Depth range:
	•	Approximately 1–35 meters (3–115 feet)

⸻

	They “walk” on coral
Their pectoral fins are reinforced with thick rays used like legs.
	No swim bladder
This is why hawkfish must perch instead of hovering.
	Excellent camouflage
Their spotted patterns often match the coral species they inhabit.
	Sequential hermaphrodites
All begin life female; dominant individuals can become male.
	Bold personality
Despite their size, pixy hawkfish aggressively defend territory from larger fish.
	Reef sentinels
Their still posture and watchful eyes make them appear like tiny guardians of the coral.

This little Hawkfish is a perfect jewel. Somebody paint this for me. It was shot with a Canon G10 in a Canon housing at Madang, Papua New Guinea.

This cute little one is a Dwarf Hawkfish - Cirrhitichthys falco. They don't mind cameras, so you can get very close. It's only about 6cm long.

Colored pencil drawing of a hawkfish. The fish looks purple due to the lighting, with red-orange and black spots. The background is an abstract blend of purple, black, blue, and white.

Been struggling to keep whitest whites in patterned subjects. In the turquoise ocean swims a little hawkfish that has a long nose. The ocean colours get darker towards the floor as the fish swims towards the light at the top. Its scales form a checkered pattern of orange and white.

Doubling up today because this little long nose #hawkfish is also #orange. Painted with acrylics instead of my usual watercolours, which made the background more challenging. #FishyFeb #FebruArty #art #acrylic #painting #ArtYear
