The bar for best history book read in 2026 has been set high. Very high. A fabulous telling of the rivalry and clashes that marked the lives of Richard II and Henry IV. Fascinating account of events previously only familiar to me via Shakespeare. Read and relish.

Should any of you fancy a spot of medieval history about a malicious, grandiose, incompetent leader might I recommend this; #TheEagleandtheHart by #helencastor. It both slaps and bangs.

Bought on your recommendation!

Need it for a future project connected to a current hist-fic project and I need to know who I can kill without butterfly-effecting someone I’ll need later!

Thanks✌🏽👍🏽

I really didn't expect Henry V to be the reasonable one in this book
Richard II has some odd resonances to our current time, this is an interesting read if you're looking for medieval history

#HelenCastor #Booksof2025 no. 14. A medieval family's letters give us a very clear sense of the very human drama behind the events of the late middle ages and Wars of the Roses. Castor combines the many threads very well and the era feels lived in; many books about this period fail to do this.
