He felt water coming down from the roof of his apartment due to a leak and then noticed swirling water around him. The water was so cold that it started to form tiny bricks-like sludge, which eventually began to flow out of the bbl. From the moment Camron noticed the water around his apartment, he knew that something was wrong—something that could affect a part of him and the people living below him. The experience became a lesson for many professionals, including Cam’ron, who were trained to explain complex systems like ecosystems to others. He spent hours trying to figure out how this bbl worked and what the water represented. In his words: “I don’t know if I’m even remembering this right, but it felt really dangerous.” What Camron knew for sure was that he could not ignore the fact that a bbl is an indicator of climate change—especially when it comes to trees in places where they’ve been overfenced and overgrazed. Water on trees can sequester carbon, leading to the release of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. But as Camron learned more about the environment he worked at—where he lived near North Carolina’s vast, logging-heavy forests—the urgency of his work intensified. He realized that the water from his bbl not only was dangerous for human health but also for animals and wildlife.
