Always love a #HengeWednesday & its Mayburgh Henge,
thankfully the builders of the M6 didn't opt to flatten it so it survives along with its singular standing stone

#HengeWednesday & when i realised i was passing by i thought i should drop back by Castilly Henge this weekend, i'd heard about some work happening soon but didn't realise the archaeology was still ongoing,
nice to see the excavations
The grass covered earthworks comprising a Roman amphitheatre with flat central, circular space surrounded by a bank and trees, blue sky above and steps in foreground
At the southern edge of Dorchester (DVRNOVARIA) in #Dorset lies Maumbury Rings, a #Roman amphitheatre, constructed from the remains of a late #Neolithic henge
Built around 2400 BC, the henge was older to the Romans than the Romans are to us 🤯

Following on from yesterday, it is only right that today’s #HengeWednesday is Giant’s Ring henge itself. Situated in Ballynahatty, Northern Ireland, this well preserved henge is 180m in diameter, enclosing an area of 6.9 acres. At least 3 of the current 5 entrances are thought to be original. 🏺
One that you wouldn't think of for #HengeWednesday
The henge at Stenness is somewhat slight nowadays, but still visible

Always good to celebrate #HengeWednesday and while we love Orkney's standing stones, you also have to admire the beautiful Henge enclosure(s) that surround them
this, of course is Brodgar

#HengeWednesday remains the most underated tag - and i often have nothing new for it, but a revisit of the Priddy Circles on a beautiful morning, gotta be done
not necessarily the easiest to parse - all three are in frame looking north in pics 1 & 4
It's #HillfortsWednesday (we often forget the extra 's') although this site is more #HengeWednesday (though not sure that hashtag exists - perhaps it should 🤣)
The much under-appreciated sister tag to #Hillfortswednesday >>> #HengeWednesday always made me so happy, hoping to get that going over here 😊
Here's the absurdly vast Giants Ring, just outside Belfast - 180 metres in diametre & for scale you can just make out the dolmen in the middle
Woodhenge was discovered by aerial photography in 1925 as a crop mark in a field of wheat. It was built c. 2500 BC & was formed of 6 concentric ovals of standing posts, surrounded by a bank & ditch. Today concrete markers show the positions of the timber posts #HengeWednesday

Built roughly between 2850 & 2200 BC, the Neolithic henge at Avebury survives as a huge circular bank & ditch.
Excavations have revealed that, due to erosion & silting, the ditch today is only 1/3 of its original depth & the bank substantially reduced in height.

Following on from my previous post. Here is a panorama of Mayburgh, showing the sheer size of the henge. The central stone is clearly visible in the middle #HengeWednesday AncientBlueSky 🏺
Mayburgh Henge, Cumbria.
A large & impressive Neolithic henge with a single standing stone in the centre. Its banks stand up to 3m high, constructed of pebbles collected from the nearby river. Old drawings suggest there may once have been more stones, since removed #HengeWednesday AncientBlueSky 🏺
Burnet Saxifrage and Agrimony are two species slowly spreading across Maumbury Rings. #HengeWednesday
Marbled White, Meadow Brown, Gatekeeper, lots of grasshoppers and Bush Crickets at Maumbury Rings today. Greater Knapweed almost all in flower now. #hengewednesday
Maumbury Rings gets a midsummer trim #Solstice2023 #hengewednesday
Right. Over to Maumbury Rings for some Midsummer Mowing. #Hengewednesday
