Found ‘What Have We Here?’, by #HewLocke at the British Museum, powerful. Juxtaposition of his works and words with controversial historical pieces in a store house setting was sobering and penetrating. 🧵

Gold breastplate depicting a human face, on display in thought provoking Hew Locke exhibition in British Museum. From the Yotoco period in Calima region of Colombia, which dates from 200 BCE-1200 CE. It would have been worn by someone of high status &then buried with them #hewlocke #britishmuseum

Parian ware busts of Queen Victoria, Alexandra of Denmark & future Edward VII dressed by the artist Hew Locke in objects that had expressed power in British Empire (such as military insignias). Very striking. On display in Hew Locke’s exhibition @britishmuseum #hewlocke #queenvictoria #imperialism

#HewLocke: what have we here? is a compelling, bold exhibition that explores, questions & challenges the messy & complex narratives of British imperialism. His language is raw, direct & compelling. One of the best shows I have seen for years @visitlondon.bsky.social I

Hew Locke's 'Ruined' in Brunswick Cemetery Gardens, St. Paul's, Bristol. A series of cast iron grave markers for local businesses that no longer exist. Really looking forward to seeing his exhibition at the British Museum this week. I love his work. #HewLocke #BristolArt

Some personal highlights from the @britishmuseum.bsky.social #HewLocke exhibition - extremely thought provoking & particular curatorial joy to be had from the storage media on display (plus faux MDF??). Locke's voice gave excellent question prompts via speakers and printed post-its #WhatHaveWeHere

Brilliant exhibition by #HewLocke at #BritishMuseum ‘what have we here’.
He’s taken objects from the archives that expose the looting and violence of British colonialism, and made his own sculptural figures, that ‘watch’ over us.
An important history lesson, as well as visually stunning.
