"Through striking sculptures and thought-provoking installations, British sculptor Hew Locke examines symbols of empire, wealth, and conflict, challenging viewers to pause, reflect, and question."
So glad I managed to get to the last day of Hew Locke insightful & moving commentary & exhibits made in conjunction with British Museum’s colonial/imperialist collections. Extraordinary. A v quiet thoughtful audience digesting…sometimes with tears. #hewlocke #BritishMuseum
Found ‘What Have We Here?’, by #HewLocke at the British Museum, powerful. Juxtaposition of his works and words with controversial historical pieces in a store house setting was sobering and penetrating. 🧵
What fire begets this fire? /Like torches thrown into the straw /If no one asks, then no one answers /That's how every empire falls

Gold breastplate depicting a human face, on display in thought provoking Hew Locke exhibition in British Museum. From the Yotoco period in Calima region of Colombia, which dates from 200 BCE-1200 CE. It would have been worn by someone of high status &then buried with them #hewlocke #britishmuseum
Ethiopian gold discs dating to the 19thC and depicting Christian scenes. They were looted in 1868 and sold to @britishmuseum in 1900. They’re on display in the museum’s thought provoking Hew Locke exhibition which challenges visitors to think about artefacts in new ways #britishmuseum #hewlocke
Hew Locke’s exhibition @britishmuseum is a fascinating exploration of his work alongside some of the artefacts in the museum. As you move through the gallery, Locke’s Watchers look down #hewlocke #britishmuseum
If you are in London, there are still a few days to visit #HewLocke exhibition. It's really.good!

Some of John White, governor of lost Roanoke colony’s, drawings of Algonquian people from 1590s. On display in fascinating Hew Locke exhibition @britishmuseum Makes the point that the poses are borrowed from Classical images &were, as Locke notes ‘an advertisement for colonists’ #hewlocke #roanoake
Parian ware busts of Queen Victoria, Alexandra of Denmark & future Edward VII dressed by the artist Hew Locke in objects that had expressed power in British Empire (such as military insignias). Very striking. On display in Hew Locke’s exhibition @britishmuseum #hewlocke #queenvictoria #imperialism

How extraordinary, I can't even remember my first time visiting the #britishmuseum or this is really my first... Well it feels good to watch and learn, also be part of it #HewLocke
#HewLocke: what have we here? is a compelling, bold exhibition that explores, questions & challenges the messy & complex narratives of British imperialism. His language is raw, direct & compelling. One of the best shows I have seen for years @visitlondon.bsky.social I
Hew Locke's exhibition at the British Museum is incredible. The most powerful and engaging show I've seen in years. #HewLocke
Hew Locke's 'Ruined' in Brunswick Cemetery Gardens, St. Paul's, Bristol. A series of cast iron grave markers for local businesses that no longer exist. Really looking forward to seeing his exhibition at the British Museum this week. I love his work. #HewLocke #BristolArt
A figure perched on the top of a chipboard showcase made by artist Hew Locke, an “observer” of the exhibition observers.

Just seen the fascinating and thought-provoking #HewLocke exhibition at the British Museum. Would be great to investigate our #Guernsey museum objects from this perspective. And to have some of Hew's brilliant figures too...
Some personal highlights from the @britishmuseum.bsky.social #HewLocke exhibition - extremely thought provoking & particular curatorial joy to be had from the storage media on display (plus faux MDF??). Locke's voice gave excellent question prompts via speakers and printed post-its #WhatHaveWeHere
Brilliant exhibition by #HewLocke at #BritishMuseum ‘what have we here’.
He’s taken objects from the archives that expose the looting and violence of British colonialism, and made his own sculptural figures, that ‘watch’ over us.
An important history lesson, as well as visually stunning.
