Yesterday's workout of 100 minutes of Zone 2 left me more drained than I had expected. Garmin wanted me to rest. I wanted to go outside. We compromised. I went up Mt Ascutney to the first lookout for some Vermont in winter glamour shots. #hikeVT

From the first plateau up Mt Ascutney's Bicentennial Trail. It comes about a mile in to the hike, right before you begin a series of switchbacks.
Let's zoom in. It really is a great vista. Look closely and there's snow in the mountains. Also, at this point, it's nice to take a short break. There's much more mountain to go
This view takes considerably less work. It's close to the parking lot for the West Windsor town forest

It's a beautiful, sunny fall day in the Upper Valley. It's not warm. I chose to hike the first 1.5 miles up Mt Ascutney's Bicentennial Trail. There were mountain bikers on the lower slopes. At higher elevations, I wanted drier clothes and maybe a fire, too. Oh, and a hot beverage, herbal tea #hikeVT

I didn't feel like I had the legs for a bike ride today, so I hiked 6 miles instead. Garmin said I did over 1400 feet of elevation. In hindsight, I probably had the legs for a bike ride. #hikeVT

I spent my the early afternoon hours on the King Farm trails, crossing into Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller a handful of times. I had two goals today: Hang out at the King Farm Overlook, then wander wherever the next trail too me. I achieved my goals.

It was a slog down but we were cruising. So funny to run into skiers from Stowe who cut over into the woods to enjoy the fresh powder—traffic near the base! We weren’t sad to get back to the dry car full of snacks

Stowe ski area, immediately adjacent to the trail, reported FIFTEEN inches.

Due to, um, unforeseen and WILD circumstances, we opted to forego the summit. We didn’t have winter tactical gear (shovels, pickaxe, etc), and knew the trek down would be grueling enough.

Down and out! 3.5 hour drive home and I’ll share some more. The snowshoe down from the shelter today was some of the most stunning scenery I’ve ever lucked into. Having it to ourselves was magic.
