P(ublius) Tutilius P(ubli) f(ilius) / O[uf(entina tribu)] / veteranus sign[if(er)] /aquilifer leg(ionis) V[-] / curator veteran(orum)] / accepit ab imperator(e) / praemia dup[licia) / natus est A(ulo) Hirtio (A(uli) f(ilio) C(aio)] / Vibio Pansa co(n)s(ulibus) de[cess(it)] / C(aio) Fufio Gemino L(ucio) Ru(bellio] / Gemino co(n)s(ulibus) sibi [et] / P(ublio) Atecingi f(ilio) [et] / Demincae (f(iliae)? et] / Andoblatoni P(ubli) f(ilio) [et] / Gnatae P(ubli) f(iliae) / t(estamento) f(ieri) [i(ussit)]

"Publius Tutilius, son of Publius, enrolled in the Oufentine tribe, veteran, standard-bearer and Eagle-bearer of the V... legion, responsible for the veterans, received double rewards from the emperor. He was born in the consulate of Aulus Hirtius, son of Aulus, and of Gaius Vibius Pansa; he died in the consulate of Gaius Fufius Geminus and Lucius Rubellius Geminus. For himself and for his son Publius Atecinx (?) and for his daughter Deminca and for Andoblatos, son of Publius, and for Gnata, daughter of Publius, he arranged by will that it be done." This soldierand his family have Latinised Celtic names and were probably local Cisalpine Gauls. This tomb stele was found built into the medieval Porta Tosa and is missing its right edge.

Tutilius lived through the last turbulent days of the republic and died at the ripe old age of 72. He was born in the fatal year of 43 BCE, when both consuls, Hirtius and Pansa, were killed within a week or so of each other by the forces of Mark Antony during the civil war that ended with the victory of Octavian and the establishment of the principate.

For #EpigraphyTuesday a rather interesting funerary #inscription for a #Celtic #veteran of the #Roman army, presumably found in the environs of #Milan. His children's names are fantastic: Atecinx, Deminca, Atoblatos, and Gnata. The doomed consuls #Hirtius and #Pansa also appear! #AncientBluesky 🏺
