Why Do We Feel So Compelled To Lug Around Bottled Water Everywhere? How big water sprung from fitness, begat wellness, and helped form the cult of better skin.

Feeling extremely validated, as a raisin lady, by Decoder ring's back catalogue entry on the invention of hydration, wondering if any #histSTM or #histsport ppl are working/have worked on the shift from thirst to dehydration, the role of hydration science in sport etc?

1976 advertisement for tastykake, a snack food company celebrating the Philadelphia Phillies winning the Eastern Division pennant. It has cartoon cooks tying ropes around a package of chocolate cupcakes atop a red pennant with the Phillies’ P logo and the phrase 1976 Eastern Division Champs. The tagline is: All the good things wrapped up in one.

I enjoy this page on facebook but felt the need to share more widely this old ad - which is *SO* Philly and I love it. And of course now I want some tastykakes. #sporthistory #histsport 🗃️

Maybe we actually should use some kind of hashtag. #histsport is a pretty good one -- better than sporthistory or sportshistory but hopefully I'm not too pedantic!

Fun fact: at the 1924 Paris Olympics the US rowing coach, horrified by the Olympic Village food (dry oranges, scanty butter), booked the team into a private hotel/restaurant. The proud lady chef served a 24 lobster platter as a 4th July treat which he refused due to 'indigestion risk' #histsport

Time to start with the reminders that if you're doing A Thing on the Paris Olympics, I am available to talk/write/podcast 🗃️ about the history of sports medicine/training/diets/sex testing/etc. No need for sausage fests ;D #histSport

Can anyone recommend articles about the rise of competitions in the 19thc? (More group activities than strictly sport or agricultural, but anything welcome!)
