#HistoricCostume: Anybody know who authorized exhuming Dorothea Sabina Pfalzgräfin von Neuburg and family, and why? As a costume enthusiast, I'm grateful, but I've always wondered.

My 17th century stays are nearly done! I have learnt so much making this, and I'm pretty happy with how it's come out!

They can be unlaced & pressed flat again, to provide a perfectly sized template for making their replacements.

Watch the ruff carefully when she spins round - it has spangles in it and you can see them winking in the light.

A cream smock with collar

A cream smock with collar

Our talented costume team have been working on a smock for our Estate Manager. The design is early Victorian although smocks had been worn by agricultural workers for centuries. Find our about the history and design of smocks on our blog www.coam.org.uk/blogs/creati...

On the left is an etching of a woman viewed from the back wearing a Victorian Natural Form style polonaise, probably from the magazine Tygodnik Mód in 1878. On the right is the pattern of the polonaise.
This is one of my favorites.

For any #HistoricCostume folks out there, do y'all have photos/videos of someone wearing an original natural form Victorian dress (not a recreation)?

Book cover of medieval tailor's assistant with a bunch of happy historically dressed people in front of a wee castle portico. The sun is shining (rare for the island the moment one dons historic costume for reenactment... it usually rains, honest) and we see three women and two men. An older woman crouches in the front with a barbette headdress and and dark brown surcote. A young woman sits to her righ with a basket on her lap, wearing a lighter green dress and an adorable dark green pointy hood. Behind her stands a young woman in light coloured gown with an apron, holding a basket against her hip, and wearing an elaborate white linen headdress with voluminous wimple. Beside her stands a younger man with bear and long hair, holding a stick with a bundle on its end over his shoulder. He is wering a light grey coloured surcote that goes to his hips and a headress from the same woolen fabric with a liripipe draped over his shoulder, lined with pale blue. An old man sits in front of him and beside the older woman, holding an open book on his knees. His cote is red and over it he wears an elegant dark brown surcote which is very long. His headdress is a simple white linen coif but with a dark round cap on top of it.

Morning book rec: Thursfield, S. (2015) The medieval tailor's assistant: Common garments 1100-1480. 2 edn. Ramsbury: Crowood. Must-have for anyone who makes medieval clothing for reenactment, living history, etc. It's well reseacherd for its practical purpose and patterns work. #HistoricCostume

1660s Baroque gentleman standing against a balustrade at the chateau Vaux le Vicomte. He has one foot daintily pointed outwards to stand in something resembling a ballet stance, with one hand resting on the silver knob of a walking stick. He is wearing heeled shoes, red stockings and red quite voluminous breeches. His long coat is blue and gold-coloured brocade, with gold buttoons, and many of them. A lace edged handkerchief hangs out of the flapped pocket. The coat sleeves are short, only to the elbows, turned up, and lined with red silk. Yellow and mustard coloured ribbon loops adorn the tunred up cuffs, and another bunch of ribbon loops on the right shoulder. This is the same side as the walking stick and the turned out foot. He is wearing a red velvet and gold fringed bandolier, a smallsword, and a white silk sash over it, also with gold fringe. His fine white linen shirt is voluminous and held up in bunches with black silk ribbon, and it has laced cuffs that fall over his hands. There is more white lace in the elbow region. His shirt has a high collar and a white linen cravat, with falling lace. The gentleman has dark long hair and wears a black wide brimmed hat with bold lace around the rims as well as white and naturally dark ostrich feathers.

I used to run a late 17th century Living History society. I created this outfit for a 1660s gentleman. I made everything except for hat, shoes, stockings.
