Wide shot of a living room with black floor and white, glass-doored bookshelves. In the centre is a mannequin with a c.1200 CE red silk floor length dress, standing in front of a grey backdrop. To the right and the left are diffuser lamps, and in the centre front the camera is visible on a tripod, Inception-like.

I turned my living room into a photo studio last night. Photographing red fabric is hard! One red silk, one red velvet. While not perfect, the final shots are better than any I tried before without the setup. Completed outfits are part of my creative practice PhD #HistoricDress #MedievalDress

I have decided to make my research on medieval dress for the PhD open access. This includes the re-creations. I could pitch a book, but I don't want to. Making historical dress is of interest to many people. I think I'll create a video series with accompanying website. #MedievalSky #HistoricDress

A photo of a cloak and hat laid out on an outdoor table covered in frost. The hat is green and adorned with a feather and two ribbons. It is a modernised copy of the medieval Lappvattnet hat found in Sweden made by a Belgian artisan, Fáel the Nomad Hatter (https://www.instagram.com/fael.nomadhatter/)
The cloak is modern, an upcycled piece made from old civil defense blankets and hospital bedsheets. It is dark grey, lined with off-white cotton fabric, and its front placket is embroidered with stylised dandelion leaves.

Winter has come. I finished a cloak, got a beautiful new hat, and translated two 16th-century #gingerbread recipes.

A white silk gown in fragments is splayed flat on a surface, softly lit from above. It has a train and is badly stained by the decomposition of the body that once wore it. It is embroidered in now-tarnished silver in wide bands along the edges.

15th century painting, the detail shows a woman in a dark blue dres standing and looking down. Her headddress is a fine white linen wimple with frilled edges pinned up on her head.

1465 detail of Adoration of the Magi by Dieric Bouts the older. I took the photos in 2015 in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. Her dark blue dress is lined with grey fur, and look at the finely frilled edge of her pinned-up linen wimple. A shift peeks through at her neckline. #HistoricDress

Lovely #vintageclothing #historicdress folk, I've just found a beautiful poss 50s/60s dress from a brand called Loren K Laurie in my local charity shop. It fits like a dream. I can't find anything about the brand online apart from a few items for sale. Wondering if anyone might have some info.

Reproduction of 12th century red silk bliaut (dress), the photo shows the neck opening with the yoke made from dark blue silk with embroidered rondels on it in red silk laid work and gold surface couching. The yoke is surrounded by freshwater pearls.

I've made some progress on the yoke with the freshwater pearls. #HistoricDress #Making #MaterialEngagement #CreativePracticeResearch BTW, the colour is different IRL, the red has less of a blue tint. I find it impossible to take photos of reds, especially fabric.

against a white background the astoundingly beautiful 12th century tunicella stands out. It is part of the Imperial coronation regalia and an incredibly deep dark blue. The silk is taffeta woven, with a broad band of red silk on the bottom hem, which is embroidered in palmetta motifs in gold. The sleeves end up narrow at the wrists, also with red silk in a very deep band which is embroidered with gold and pearls.

I also enjoy that even in the imperial tunicella only indigotine can be proven, and that the silk was probably dyed with woad. (how often I wonder) Can't be proven, though, nor where the taffeta silk came from or where it was dyed. #HistoricDress

WIP-

fun fact I dabbled in fashion design in high school.

Seeing a lot of Neil Newbon’s outfits has sparked a bug in my brain about implementing historic clothing technique into modern fashion, leaning into size adaptability-

Of course it’s also inspired by BG3

Several photos show various stages of the dried yellow-dyed silk. In the first one I am holding a piece of the ivory silk leftover against the dyed piece that has been ironed and hangs over a white door. In the second the piece is dried but terribly wrinkled. In fact, one can never really get the creases out of silk after it has been squeezed and crinkled while wet. The third bottom one shows the yellow - which appears to be kind of buttery in that light - nice and smoothly ironed over the door, and in the last one on the top right the ironed silk is draped over a stool in the conservatory to try and show off the sheen. Try is the important word, because photographing textiles is a magical art I have never mastered. Sorry.

The silk doesn't look quite so bright any longer when dry. Example of extant narrow silk facing on 14th century fragment on woollen garment London find. Silk strip or facing normally held in place by series of running stitches along the inner edge and hem-stitched into place. #HistoricDress 🧵 2/6
