#LookUpLondon: Iβve just strolled past the old Portland Arms in Portland Road, Holland Park - which, like many one-time London pubs, isnβt a pub any more. #AnorakFact: its street corner was often used as a location in the Thames TV series #Minder (β79-94). #HistoryOnTheHoof
#LookUpLondon: spotted & snapped at 87 Jermyn Street, St Jamesβs, London, a branch of the menβs outfitters Hackett but also, & much more important, a former residence of one of the greatest polymaths in history, Isaac Newton, duly honoured with a blue plaque. #HistoryOnTheHoof
#LookUpLondon: this tatty & unprepossessing terraced house at 22 Cleveland Street, Fitzrovia, London, was not once but twice the home of the great Charles Dickens. #AnorakFact: it was known as 10 Norfolk Street in Dickensβ day. #HistoryOnTheHoof
#LookUpLondon: spotted & snapped in Gillingham Street, near Victoria, yesterday evening: a blue plaque for the great writer Joseph Conrad, who was born in Poland but became a true master of English; a Ford Ranger; & an #AccidentalSelfie (look carefully). #HistoryOnTheHoof
My husband Angel & I were in beautiful West Sussex today, & here I am driving across Greatham Bridge, which was commissioned by Henry Tregoz, whose family held the Manor of Greatham in the 13th century. Most historians agree that Greatham Bridge was built in 1294. #HistoryOnTheHoof
#LookUpLondon: spotted & snapped at Earlβs Court tube (District Line) just now, one of 4 classic destination lightboxes, dating from 1905, featuring an old-style lit arrow pointing to the destination station, now restored & connected to a new signalling system. #HistoryOnTheHoof
#LookUpLondon: what a pity it is - pic 1 - that the City of Westminster officials canβt spell Carlos Pace - pic 2! #HistoryOnTheHoof
If youβre ever in the Surrey town of Horley, have a beer in this pub. Why? Because it used to be a car showroom, built in β33 by the Fairman family, whose most famous son is racing driver Jack Fairman, after whom itβs named; he was born #OnThisDay in 1913. #HistoryOnTheHoof (1/3)
#LookUpLondon: I snapped this pic while walking between meetings earlier today. Trafalgar Square is unfailingly photogenic. #HistoryOnTheHoof
