Elio de Angelis, born #OnThisDay in ’58, started 108 #F1 GPs from ’79 to ’86, winning 2. Pic (by Rainer Schlegelmilch): he finished 3rd at Monaco in ’85 & - #AnorakFact - after the race he led the F1 drivers’ world championship by 2 points from Alain Prost & Michele Alboreto.

Remembering Brian Naylor, born #OnThisDay in 1923. A navy man in WW2, he raced 7 #F1 GPs (’57-61), first in Coopers then in his own JBWs (pic), without success. #AnorakFact: he finished 42nd in the ’61 #Daytona500, thus becoming the first European driver to race in #Nascar.

Remembering Eugène Martin, born #OnThisDay in 1915. He drove 2 #F1 GPs, Silverstone (pic) & Bremgarten ’50, in a Talbot-Lago, DNF-ing in both. In ’49 he’d won the #AixLesBainsCircuitDuLacGP in a Jicey-BMW. #AnorakFact: later he penned the Martin-Spéciale road car, which failed.

#OnThisDay in 2003, in Sepang, these 3 stood on the #MalaysianGP podium. #AnorakFact: it was Kimi Räikkönen’s first #F1 GP win, & it was Fernando Alonso’s first F1 GP podium.

Remembering Oswald Karch, born #OnThisDay in 1917. He entered one GP, the ’53 #GermanGP (pic), started by 34 drivers (the most in any championship GP - #AnorakFact). Karch qualified 34th in a Meteor-Veritas but retired on lap 11 with engine failure. He died in 2009, aged 91.

Remembering René Dreyfus, born #OnThisDay in 1905. Pic: Rudi Caracciola (Merc W154) outdrags pole man Dreyfus (Delahaye 145) at the start of the ’38 #PauGP, which Dreyfus won. #AnorakFact: after WW2 Dreyfus became a US citizen & a restaurateur, opening 2 restaurants in New York.

Remembering Robert La Caze, born #OnThisDay in 1917. He drove one #F1 GP, Morocco ’58 (pic), took up skiing (becoming Moroccan champ), then ran a garage in Marrakech. #AnorakFact: he was the oldest living F1 driver from the death of Paul Pietsch (2012) until his own death (2015).

#HappyBirthday François Mazet, 83. Mazet won the ’69 French #F3 Championship, tried #F2 without success in ’70, & drove one #F1 GP in ’71, at Paul Ricard, in a Jo Siffert-entered March 701 (pic). #AnorakFact: Mazet was later involved in Essex Petroleum’s sponsorship of Lotus.

#AnorakFact: Lance George William Detlev Graf Haugwitz-Hardenberg-Reventlow (his full name) was one of the last people to speak to James Dean (pic). They had coffee 30 minutes before Dean was killed in a car accident near Cholame, California, in his new Porsche 550 Spyder. (2/2)
