1970 #F1 title contenders...At the end Jacky Ickx was relief because he was NOT the World Champion. Due to Rindt's death.. #F1jp Great shot by Rainer W. Schlegelmilch in 1970 #GermanGP.
Remembering Oswald Karch, born #OnThisDay in 1917. He entered one GP, the ’53 #GermanGP (pic), started by 34 drivers (the most in any championship GP - #AnorakFact). Karch qualified 34th in a Meteor-Veritas but retired on lap 11 with engine failure. He died in 2009, aged 91.
Which driver famously won the 1968 German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring in dense fog and rain by over four minutes?
Sir Jackie Stewart delivered a masterful wet-weather driving display, known as a 'Regenmeister' performance, dominating the challenging Nürburgring Nordschleife in treacherous conditions for Matra.

Here’s a beautiful pic of a very rare car: it’s an AFM (short for Alex von Falkenhausen Motorenbau) & the pic was taken during the ’52 #GermanGP at Nürburgring. It was the driver’s first GP, & he drove only one more. His name was Willi Heeks. He was born #OnThisDay in 1922.
Remembering Theo Fitzau, born #OnThisDay in 1923, who drove just one GP, Nürburgring ’53 (pic), at the wheel of friend & fellow driver Helmut Niedermayr’s AFM-BMW. Fitzau DNF’d. #AnorakFact: Niedermayr had raced the same car to 9th place in the previous year’s #GermanGP.
Tony Maggs’ Brabham careened off the Pietermaritzburg track into an area where spectators weren’t permitted but where 8-year-old Michael Twyman was standing, being ushered to a safe area by marshals, but too late. Maggs never got over it. Pic: his Lotus 18, #GermanGP, ’61. (2/2)
Remembering Richard Seaman, born #OnThisDay in 1913. He raced for Merc from ’37 to ’39, winning the ’38 #GermanGP. If you haven’t already bought it, today would be a good day to buy my good friend Richard Williams’ (pic) excellent biography, #ARaceWithLoveAndDeath.
#GermanGP 2019
The last German Grand Prix was held in 2019, I was there, and we want it back :-)
F1 boss Stefano Domenicali is not ruling out a return of the German Grand Prix

I’m not big on the playing up the local stuff (cowboy hats in Texas for example) but if the #GermanGP ever makes a comeback, I’d be 100% behind all the #F1 drivers being required to arrive at the track wearing #StrumpfHosen.
Günther Bechem was born #OnThisDay in 1921. He raced an AFM-BMW in the ’53 #GermanGP, having raced a BMW-Eigenbau as Bernhard Nacke in the ’52 German GP. #AnorakFact: quite a few drivers have raced under pseudonyms but only one has entered 2 GPs under 2 different names.
Dick Gibson died #OnThisDay in 2010, aged 92. A hillclimber, he raced in 2 GPs: Nürburgring ’57 & ’58. #AnorakFact: in the ’57 #GermanGP Donavon Smith took a series of great colour pics, including this one of Gibson pushing his Cooper to a safe place after it had failed him.
#HappyBirthday André Milhoux, 97, a touring car racer who was a guest of Gordini for the ’56 #GermanGP. André Pilette was injured in practice so Milhoux took over his Gordini T32, qualified it 22nd & last, & thereby drove a one-off #F1 GP at Nürburgring. F1 was different then!

Rewatching the #GermanGP of 2019. With a race! Dear#F1 community: Why the fuck don’t we have a #GermanGP anymore? Give me the old Hockenheim layout please!

Remembering Manfred Winkelhock, who died #OnThisDay 40 years ago following injuries sustained the day before in a big shunt in the #Mosport1000km #WEC race, in a Kremer Porsche 962C. His last #F1 GP was therefore the #GermanGP, the previous weekend, in a RAM-Hart 03 (pic).
#OnThisDay in ’80 Jacques Laffite won the #GermanGP in a Ligier JS11/15, elegant in French blue unadorned by Gitanes logos (tobacco branding being banned in Germany & the UK already in those days). This shot shows off its sliding skirts to good effect - to ground effect in fact.
Dominant #GermanGP victory #OnThisDay in ’83 by Arnoux, after the engine failure of team-mate Tambay, who’d taken the pole in the other Ferrari. What a gloriously brutal machine the 126C3 was - just look at that huge rear twin-wing (at Hockenheim of all low-downforce places).
#OnThisDay in ’82, in practice for that year’s #GermanGP, Ferrari’s Didier Pironi had a massive shunt. He survived it, but he never raced in #F1 again. Could he have done? Maybe - for McLaren. It’s explained in my latest #MotorSport column. Click below.

#OnThisDay in ’66 Brabham won the #GermanGP at Nürburgring in a Brabham BT19, after pole man Clark (Lotus 33) crashed out uncharacteristically; 2nd & 3rd were the Cooper-Maserati T81s of Surtees & Rindt. I’ve pictured Rindt because it was his first #F1 GP podium & it’s a fab pic.
#AnorakFact #1: the ’67 #GermanGP featured #F1’s only all-Antipodean championship GP podium, Denny Hulme 1st (pic; Bernard Cahier), Jack Brabham 2nd & Chris Amon 3rd. #AnorakFact #2: it was also F1’s first championship GP podium featuring no Brits at all since Monaco ’62. (2/2)
Serene concentration & total control: #OnThisDay in ’56 Juan Manuel Fangio won the #GermanGP at Nürburgring, in this Lancia-Ferrari D50, from the pole, with fastest lap, leading all the way: a grand chelem. #AnorakFact: the German GP was also held #OnThisDay in ’73 & ’84.
