When Sheldrake complains that Baxter had quit his job and refused to let him use the apartment -- especially with Miss Kubelik -- Fran realizes that Baxter loves her and that she loves him. She gives a little smile and tells Sheldrake "that's the way it crumbles, cookie-wise." She then slips out while Sheldrake is distracted by the midnight celebration and singing of "Auld Lang Syne" and runs through the streets of New York to Baxter's apartment.
As Miss Kubelik runs up the stairs to Baxter's apartment she hears what sounds to her like it might be a gunshot coming from the apartment. She is alarmed because after her suicide attempt he had confessed to once thinking about killing himself over another woman. But it turned out he had merely opened a bottle of champaign.
Once inside the apartment, Miss Kubelik and Mr. Baxter resume a gin rummy game they had begun when she was recuperating. Baxter confesses his love for her, then repeats "You hear what I said, Miss Kubelik? I absolutely adore you." She hands him the deck of cards and says "Shut up and deal."
