Habitación de hotel Silencioso 1931 Retrato del artista Eduard Hopper 1882 - 1967 Estados Unidos Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid (España) Como un silencioso voyeur, Hopper mira (y nos hace mirar) por un agujero en la pared para espiar a esta mujer anónima en su habitación de hotel. Sentada en su cama a medio vestir —oa medio desnudar—, no sabe que la estamos observando. Ha dejado ropa, zapatos y sus maletas en el suelo (suponemos que es una viajera que está de paso, está lejos de casa), y lee ensimismada un papel amarillento. La escena transmite dos cosas presentes en toda la obra de Hopper: soledad y silencio. La modelo es Jo, la mujer del artista. Josephine Nivison posó para su marido en numerosos cuadros y afirma en sus anotaciones que en este en concreto que ese papel amarillento era un horario de trenes. Pero una de las cosas que nos encanta de Hopper es que nos hace crear narrativas de la nada. Nos hace participar como espectadores. Como en las novelas de Dashiell Hammett, sus escenas son lacónicas, atmosféricas, salpicadas de algunos detalles para que el lector vaya construyendo su propia historia. Y en mi caso, este cuadro me lleva directamente a una escena de cine negro. Ese papel que lee la mujer puede ser una carta de amor de su amante, o quizás una nota de chantaje. Puede ser una póliza de seguro de vida para cobrar una doble indemnización tras asesinar a su marido maltratador, o lo mejor sí es un horario de trenes y la mujer se va a escapar con dinero robado en el lugar en el que trabaja. Va a pasar la noche en ese hotel, pero antes se va a dar una ducha…
