Article from Cumberland & Westmorland Herald 1 September 1917 titled "Chestnuts to save food" School authorities and teachers are again reminded of the utility of harvesting the horse chestnut crop by organising the efforts of the children. For every ton collected half a ton of grain can be saved for human consumption, states the Board of Education. School committees are suggested, one of their duties being to see that the chestnuts are collected. When the collection is complete the committee should inform the Director of Propellant Supplies, Whitehall, S.W., stating the estimated quantity, and the Ministry of Munitions will arrange to remove the nuts.
