The Roman forts on Hadrian’s Wall had an active military life of nearly 300 years and during that time required constant repairs and modifications. The weather was the most relentless enemy the soldiers faced. On the south wall at #Housesteads fort is this late interval tower built after AD240
Found only one plant in flower today... Whitlow grass; Erophila verna with three frozen flowers literally growing on #HadriansWall near #Housesteads at -3C #NewYearPlantHunt @bsbibotany.bsky.social
Still got mine, including the proxy stamp courtesy of yourself because I didn’t think to check there’d be more than one stamping station in one day 🙄 #Housesteads

Black and white photograph showing a large open cistern constructed from rectangular stone slabs standing on their sides, beyond which may be seen the remaining lower courses of a stone-built tower. A stone gully enters from the near-left of frame, skirts the edge of the cistern, and exits through the mid-right of frame, where is it joined by another stone gully leading from an opening in the cistern's side wall. In the distance there are rolling hills, grassy but with small patches of woodland, and the sky is lightly clouded.

Black and white photograph of a roman gateway at Housesteads Fort. The bases of two square towers remains, up to a height of four or five courses of squared-off stone. A stone cistern can be seen in front of the left-most tower. Between the towers, a wide opening is punctuated by a central stone pier of square cross-section. The double pathway that it creates is grassed over, as is the land both inside and outside the gate. The wall of the fort, again about four or five course in height, extends on either side of the gateway. In the distance, Hadrians Wall runs in a north-easterly direction toward the leftmost edge of a patch of woodland that occupies the mid-right of frame. Further away, there is another wooded area just above centre-frame, standing in expansive grassland. The sky is mainly clear, but decorated with light cloud.

A stonework relief depiction of the God mercury, rectangular and in portrait aspect. He is naked apart from his winged hat, and has a cloak over his left arm. His left hand holds a staff and is right a money bag. He faces slightly to the left. The lower part of the stone is damaged, with a crack across his right ankle and his left foot missing entirely.
Mercury in classical pose, winged hat, money bag, cloak and all. (The #RoyalSignals would look rather more casual if this version was their 'Jimmy'.) Found at #Housesteads fort, and on display in the museum there. #RomanBritain #ReliefWednesday #Northumberland
I'm working on a new 20cm square painting of Sycamore Gap...... From my photos of happier days, before the tree was felled.
But I expect that's very obvious from this photo of it.....😉#Northumberland #HadriansWall #Romans #Housesteads #TheSill #Vindolanda
Depiction of Mercury from the Housesteads museum. A splendid little museum with an interesting film. Well worth a visit. #mercury #romanhistory #housesteads #northumberland

It’s raining on #HadriansWall today. Some photos from my archive of #Housesteads Fort & vicus for #RomanFortThursday. The north wall of the fort is Hadrian’s Wall. No. 4 shows narrow shop buildings in the settlement outside the fort’s South Gate.

Armies march on their stomachs. As true now as 2000 years ago. Roman forts had Horrea, warehouses, usually next door to the headquarters, Principia, where foods and drinks were securely stored.
📸 my own, the Horrea at #Housesteads (Vercovicium) on #HadriansWall, in #Northumberland

Known as Vercovicium, #Housesteads Roman Fort was built during 122-32CE. It is one of the best preserved Roman forts along Hadrian's Wall.

The relief in the background is called a tauroctony, found at Housesteads. It would have been the focal point in the cave-like underground temples to Mithras, known as Mithraeums. The arched top indicates the cave in which Mithras killed the sacred bull as the act of creation. The snake, the dog and the scorpion are jumping up to lick the blood. Mithras is accompanied by twin torch bearers, Cautes and Cautopates. The statue fragment on the left is believed to represent Cautes, found at Carrawburgh fort.
Shrine to Mithras, found at #Housesteads on #hadrianswall Eastern worshippers believed the god to be born from a cosmic egg, as depicted here. The egg is decorated with the signs of the Zodiac - this is the earliest known depictions in of these in Britain.
My first ever post! No one will see this but it's #housesteads Roman Fort #hadrianswall 😀
