IC2944 Running Chicken Nebula

IC 2944, also known as the Running Chicken Nebula, is an open cluster with an associated emission nebula found in the constellation Centaurus. It features dense, opaque dust clouds, known as "globules", which are frequently a site of active star formation.

The image shows bright, glowing hydrogen gas silhouetted against dark, opaque clouds of interstellar gas and dust, known as Thackeray's Globules. These clouds, potentially forming massive stars, are fractured and churned by intense UV radiation from nearby young stars. The scene is a vibrant display of cosmic activity 5,900 light-years away.
