Clinical Trials Day 2025 Today’s topic is public involvement in research!
Public involvement in research is... “research that is done 'with' or 'by' the public, not 'to', 'about' or 'for' them”
For example, this might involve patients or carers and they could have a say in... the design of the research, what happens, and how the research results are shared. It does not mean that they take part as a research participant!
Public involvement in research is important! It can: Make sure research answers the questions important to patients Make sure that the research is designed so participants are less likely to drop out Make information about the research more understandable, such as the patient information sheet Make sure the results are shared in the best way to reach those who might be interested

Clinical Trials Day 2025 Today’s topic is informed consent! What does informed consent mean? Why does it matter?
Informed consent is when a person is told about the research and what it involves, choosing freely to take part in it. This generally happens before the research. This is an important part of ensuring research involving humans is carried out ethically. However, this was not always the case....
In the 1930's, the US Public Health Service started the Tuskegee Syphilis study, to observe “the natural history of syphilis”. Black men with and without syphilis were involved in the study but informed consent was not taken. In the 40's, penicillin was being used widely as a treatment but this was not offered to the men. In the 70's, a story about the study was published, resulting in the trial being stopped. By that time, 74 were still alive. 128 had died of syphilis or complications, 40 wives were infected and 19 children had congenital syphilis.
