A bunch of shipping companies invested lots of money into automating cargo load and offload, and discovered that the increase in staffing to accommodate safety made it almost as, or more expensive, to do so.
This may be why it works so well in other parts of the world...

Arrived #Easter Sunday, 10,000 strong. #CésarChávez & #LarryItliong. Attacked by #vigilantes; sprayed w/pesticides. #ILWU #solidarity; refused to load grapes.
#ILWU is probably one of the strongest labor unions in the world.

We're several years into #AI software that will eliminate almost all #longshoreman jobs worldwide. #Ships will be unloaded by a person behind a computer. Same for warehouses. #ILA #ILWU
VW pulled out a year or so ago, from doing this, as the state was a right-to-work state. VW wanted a union to do all the negotiating, etc. Glad to hear that at least one of the states is allowing union activity.

In an early #boycott against the #apartheid policies of #SouthAfrica, on #ThisDayInHistory in 1962 over 100 longshoremen from #ILWU, over two separate shifts in #SanFrancisco, refused to unload a cargo from that country. It was unloaded the next day but showed growing solidarity.

On #ThisDayInHistory in 1984, dockworkers in #SanFrancisco with my old #union #ILWU refused to unload cargo from #apartheid #SouthAfrica. They went without pay for eleven days, holding out until the #Reagan administration, backing apartheid, threatened gaol time for the workers.

Today in #LaborHistory 11/20/1969: #Indigenous #AIM activists seized control of #Alcatraz & occupied it until ousted by US Govt 19 mos later. Treaty of Fort Laramie ceded all abandoned fed land to the Indians who once occupied it. Supported by #BlackPanther, #BrownBerets & #ILWU.

Today in #LaborHistory 11/2/2011: #GeneralStrike by Occupy Oakland in response to brutal, militarized #police attack on their encampment. 18% of schools closed because of lack of #teachers. 5% of city workers stayed home. #ILWU participation kept Port of Oakland below capacity for the entire day.
2/11 First is #RobAshton, the "dark horse" and president of the #ILWU Canada.
He's a B.C. dockworker, not a "policy wonk."
"I talk like I talk at work. I'm not gonna bullshit you," he told CBC.
He is seen as a "raw, unvarnished and grounded" persona.
