A Japanese Submarine shelled targets in and near the #Ellwood Oilfields in California; the first time the U.S. Mainland had been attacked since 1812. Damage was minimal, but triggered the #WestCoastInvasion Scare, and served as a pretext for the #Internment of Japanese Americans.
On #ThisDayInHistory in 1942, #FDR signed the viciously racist #ExecutiveOrder9066, leading to 120,000 #JapaneseAmericans, 2/3 of them born in the United States, being sent to #ConcentrationCamps for years. Stop calling this an #internment --- that word is for prisoners of war.
Many lost their homes & property as a result of the forced re-location and #internment, not to mention their freedom. Later research has determined that the mass imprisonment of #Japanese-Americans was motivated more by #racism than the "military necessity" that was used as an excuse at the time.

On #ThisDayInHistory in 1972, the #BogsideMassacre in #Derry (on another #BloodySunday) was done by the UK military. A protest against #internment was fired on, with 14 killed. This helped #IRA recruitment and 1972 became the most violent year of #TheTroubles in #NorthernIreland.
